Ross Shelton took charge of Parkgate for the first time yesterday, and the Steelmen left Inkersall Road empty-handed after a hard- fought battle with Staveley Miners Welfare – and although disappointed at the outcome, Ross already knows he needs to find a cutting edge to add to his side’s work ethic, writes Colin Muncie.
Ross commented” Reflecting on yesterday’s game, I am disappointed. We were poor in the first half, and didn’t really create anything apart from hitting the post from a free kick midway through the first half.”
The Trojans changed the complexion of the game with a scrambled goal right on the interval which prompted Ross to make a tactical change from his starting 4-4-2. “I changed the system at half time to 4-3-3 and in the second half we were a bit better “he said. “I thought maybe we deserved to get something out of the game after the break despite not really creating much ourselves”.
Behind the scenes, Ross, his staff and the club continue to work hard to reinforce the playing staff at Roundwood, and Parkgate’s Acting Manager is very clear on where he’d like to add fresh faces to his squad, particularly with an awkward-looking trip to Cleckheaton on the horizon. Ross told us “As I commented after last week’s game, I think we're just missing a bit of creative spark in the final third at the minute.”
“But hopefully with a couple of extra additions we can change that on Tuesday night away at Liversedge - another tough away game” (Clayborn Ground, Quaker Lane, Cleckheaton WF15 8DF 7.45 pm).
