Fast Start Fizzles Out
From the kick-off Rainworth took the game to Penistone and they were unlucky after 30 seconds when Jamal Smith’s effort struck the post.
Smith was in action again when in the 6th minute James Birch was grateful to see his effort strike him and deflect for a corner.
From the corner Tim Whittaker’s fiercely hit shot from the edge of the area struck the crossbar with Birch a mere spectator. A minute later and Sam Bebbington’s effort just cleared the same crossbar.
Just when it seemed Rainworth’s bombardment would result in a goal, in the 10th minute Penistone broke and Nathan Keightley’s attempt was inches wide with Ben Townsend well beaten.
A minute later hesitation in the Rainworth defence saw Kieran Ryan’s stab hit the post. It was now Penistone’s turn to press and in the 12th minute the defence was caught out and Ryan’s chip beat Townsend for the opener.
The game calmed down and it wasn’t until the 36th minute that either keeper had anything to do after the early onslaught, when Jack Waddle’s fierce shot was well held by Birch.
On the stroke of half-time Nathan Modest turned in the area but he couldn’t keep his effort down and it cleared the crossbar. That was the last play of the half with Penistone leading 1-0.
The start to the second half was just as quick as the first but this time it was Penistone on the front foot and an excellent move in the 46th minute ended with Keightley heading home the well struck cross.
Two minutes later Rainworth pulled one back as Modest won the ball in the area and set up Smith who made no mistake. A minute later they were level as Waddle puts the ball in the far corner.
A minute later and poor defending as a team gives Keightley the easiest of chances to put Penistone back in front.
Two minutes later Penistone had the ball in the net again but it was ruled out for offside. The rest bite was short lived as another piece of woeful defending allowed Tom Brennan to double the lead.
Rainworth brought on Lee Betts for Daniel State in the 57th minute. They were unlucky on 62 minutes when Liam Royles’s goal-bound effort looked destined for the top corner only for Birch to pull off an excellent save.
Rainworth made another substitution in the 65th minute bringing on Kieran Barnes for Bebbington.
In the 72nd minute Rainworth went close again as Rob Ludlam’s header flashed past the upright from Royles’s corner.
Rainworth should have reduced the deficit in the 76th minute when Smith was brought down in the area. Modest's weak penalty was easily saved by Birch.
Rainworth made their final substitution in the 79th minute bringing on James Munson for Brad Wilson.
Rainworth however continued to struggle against the pace of Penistone up front and when Ryan Smith broke in the 86th minute he gave Townsend no chance for their fifth.
Penistone still hadn’t finished and seconds before the final whistle Ludlam was adjudged to have fouled in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Unlike Rainworth’s penalty Keightley gave Townsend no chance from the penalty spot.
It had been a strange game in the early exchanges Rainworth MWFC had looked the likely winners, conceded two goals, came back and once again looked possible winners, but in the end Penistone’s pace proved too much.
