Chertsey End Redbridge Vase Run

Chertsey emphatically beat Redbridge 5-0 and progress through to the 4th Round of the FA Vase

Redbridge hosted Combined Counties league side Chertsey Town in the 3rd Round of the FA Vase at the second time of trying after last Saturday's original tie was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The away side were having plenty of early possession putting Redbridge under pressure and had shouts for a penalty when Jake Baxter fell to the ground under the challenge of Remi Nelson but any penalty appeals were quickly waved away

Redbridge then came forward as Samuel Phillips played in Michael Ogboin who saw his cross cut out for a corner before Larry Asare then used his pace out on the right flank as he also won a corner.

It was an evenly matched opening twenty minutes although Chertsey continued to look the more lively in the final third and came forward yet again however Remi Nelson was well placed to make a vital clearance and concede the corner.

A short corner routine followed which resulting in a cross floated into the box finding Sam Murphy who got in front of the Redbridge defenders and was able to stab the bal home for the opening goal.

The goal certainly put Chertsey in the ascendency as they continued to pile on the pressure with Dale Binns on the left in particular causing all sorts of problems and Chico Ramos back in goal for Redbridge was required to make several good stops to keep the score down.

A brief respite for the home side as they attacked through Asare as he got to the by-line and pulled the ball back for Bryan Kyungu who was unable to keep his effort on target.

It never took long for Chertey to double their advantage as Murphy broke clear of the Redbridge back line and slotted past Ramos for his second of the afternoon.

Binns almost grabbed a third as he his effort rebounded off Ramos and up onto the cross bar and away to safety.

As the half came to an end Redbridge were awarded a free kick , up stepped Patrick Duggan who smashed his effort goal bound which appeared to hit a post before rolling across the goal line and out of touch., had that gone in then things may have been very different

The second half began with Chertsey continuing to ask questions and hesitation at the back almost allowed Baxter to steal in but his shot was cleared.

A poor clearance from Tommie Turner saw Binns pick up the ball , he released Murphy who made no mistake rifling home his hattrick.

The home side made a double substitution in hope of getting something out of the game and one of those in Terrell Miller got down the right but his shot could only find the side netting

Baxter then got to the ball first beating the outrushing Ramos in goal and he lifted the ball over the keeper and it rolled into an empty net to make it 4-0.

Murphy and Baxter missed good chances to further increase the score but they were not to be denied when their danger man Binns was first to react to a poor goal kick and he strode forward and smashed his effort into the far corner.

A rare chance at the end came as DJ Adelekan crossed into the middle finding Tyrone Scarlett who could only fire over from close range before the whistle was blown on a miserable afternoon for the hosts who were well beaten by a strong side who will be looking to go far in the competition.
