Walden lose in second round of the Cup

By

A good performance as an inexperienced team show great heart against a full strength Letchworth side.

Walden took an inexperienced team to the Cup game v Letchworth with only half a dozen first team regulars and with some of those playing out of position it was no surprise that they came out second best.
However many positives can come out of the game with many young players gaining valuable experience at this level which will stand them and the club in a good place later on in the season and the following years.
Letchworth started strongly scoring three unanswered tries plus a penalty in the first quarter of the game and it looked ominous for the visitors at 20 - 0.
To Waldens great credit they fought back, Letchworth conceded a penalty and Paul Marshall playing at flyhalf kicked to the corner and from the resulting 5 metre line out a catch and drive was stopped just short of the try line and scrum half Keegan Diggons passed to centre Gerhard Wessels playing his first game of the season, who shrugged off two defenders to dive over the line.
Then two minutes later another fine kick to the corner by Marshall and Walden won another close range line out, this time choosing to pass out of the maul and Ollie Webber came off his wing running a great line cutting through the defence to score.
Walden were now only 2 scores behind at 20 -10 and with no more points by either team for the rest of the half they might have sensed an upset, but it was not to be as Letchworth capitalised on a couple of mistakes early in the second half and increased their lead to 34 - 10 to put the game beyond reach.
Walden had some good passages of play but could not break through and it was only until towards the end of the game that the home team scored again to leave the final score at 39 -10.
Special mentions must go to Tristan Harris playing out of position, JP Levick tackling his heart out, Morgan Brewer providing pace on the wing, Alex Wilson tireless in defence and Monty Garrett and Ed Smith giving much needed energy off the bench, plus Jo Turner all giving their all and most making their first team debuts.
