Goodbye 2014, the worst year in the history of Seaford Town Football Club. Hello 2015, bringing with new hope and expectations.
Sadly no, with yet another defeat to add to the sad tally after a 0-4 drubbing at home by Mile Oak on Saturday, despite the introduction of 2 new signings with more on the way.
The rain devastated the Sussex County League programme and the game at the Crouch was one of only 3 played in the whole League, and then only after ait had undergone 2 pitch inspections, the last by the match referee who declared it fit an hour before kick-off. Unfortunately further heavy rain before and during the game made conditions very poor and Town never managed to overcome them.
The introduction of new signing Oliver Jones and George Bish gave manager Ben Barnett the chance to ring the changes, moving himself into central midfield, recalling John Pullinger at the back to play alongside David Hawes and Michael Flynn on the right with Bish on the left of the defence. Theo Baker returned after missing 2 games to play alongside Jones in attack.
The start was encouraging when Baker chested the ball into the path of Ben Courtnage whose first time effort was well saved by Oak ‘keeper Aaron Stenning, but 12 minutes into the game the referee ignored an offside flag, allowing Oak to break down the left and the cross was met by the unmarked Andy McDowell to give the visitors the lead.
Courtnage pounced on a poor Oak free kick but his early effort went narrowly wide, but right at the end of the half the visitors increased their advantage.
Barnett had to leave the field after receiving treatment, but while he was waiting to come back on Mile Oak built an attack on his side of the pitch, preventing the referee from allowing him to return. The ball was played into the middle and Lloyd Skinner guided it past Ben Head in Seaford’s goal.
If that wasn’t bad enough, just a minute into the second period it was 0-3. The ball was played in from the right where Eric Wedge-Bull smashed it in first time from the edge of the penalty area, giving Head no chance to save it.
Things continued to deteriorate when Barnett was booked for a miss-timed tackle, unfortunately he had been booked in the first half for dissent to leave his side to play the rest of the game with just 10 men.
As conditions worsened so did the football with a Jones header over the bar all Town had to show by way of a fight back and Adam Dine’s goal 2 minutes from time just summed up the general performance.
John Foley joined Barnett’s management team during the week and he quickly realised the task ahead if Seaford are to salvage something from the rest of the season.
Mile Oak return to the Crouch on Saturday in the second round of the Division Two Cup, hopefully there will be a dramatic improvement both in the conditions and performance.
Team: Head, Flynn, Bish, B.Barnett, Hawes (Stevens), Pullinger, Courtnage, Perkins (Le Cras), Jones, Hayward, Baker (Ashton)
