Bankers get an unwelcome return to Davy

By

Bankers good form was thrown out of the window on a match to forget for the First team.

With a squad of 15 available on the day, manager Risho named his team:

GK: Sam Blackburn
Def: Richard Bartimote, Mike Elliott, Lewis Robinson, Jo Robinson
Mid: Robert Jerrison, Mikey Russell (C), Chris Tunstall, Jack Joyce
CF: James Fletcher, Sami Eric

Subs: Joe Jerrison, Matt Taylor, Scott Dinnigan, Jack Roe (unused)
Management Team: Ryan Griffiths, Jason Paine

With a less than impressive warm up from Bankers it was not a surprise that the opening stages of the match were played at a slow tempo. Neither team looked threatening or in control of the game. Davy had the first decent chance of the match when a headed effort was saved off the line by Robert Jerrison. Bankers reacted to that chance by creating one of their own. A ball came in from the left hand side and found Sami Eric towards the far post, but his shot was also blocked by an outfield player.

The first half finished goalless. Manager Risho instructed the team to press higher up the pitch and build momentum by passing the ball around on the deck.

The second half saw the tempo increase slightly, but it was still fairly lacklustre from both teams. Around the 50 minute mark, Davy took the lead after a shot from outside the area hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced in and out of the goal. The ref ruled it to have gone over the line and gave the goal.1-0 to Davy.

The lead didn’t last too long however as Bankers pulled a goal back. Sami Eric slotted in Mikey Russell who had made a dashing run forward and, with the outside of his boot, he hit it first time into Davy’s net. Good build up play from Bankers and a nice finish from the skipper.

Lewis Robinson was replaced by Joe Jerrison in the centre of defence and shortly after Matt Taylor replaced Richard Bartimote at right back.

Both teams still struggled to create more chances. Davy FC were playing the more attacking game however, and were regularly leaving 4 players up front. They attacked Bankers’ area a few times but the defence were blocking most attacks.

At the other end James Fletcher was starting to see more of the ball, and got a couple of shots off. The addition of Scott Dinnigan up front (replacing Jack Joyce), provided an outlet to get in behind Davy’s defence. Scott had a chance to score when a rebounded shot flew towards him, but he wasn’t allowed time to get the ball out from under his feet before getting the shot off and the keeper made the save.

Davy took the lead, with around 10 minutes to go. A bouncing ball made its way through the defence and the left winger latched onto the ball and slotted it in when through one on one with Keeper Sam. Bankers protested a foul in the build-up to the goal but the referee waved the claims away.

Bankers tried to force a goal back but were missing the quality that has been present in the previous matches since the turn of the year. It just wasn’t working for Bankers on this day.

The match finished 2-1 to Davy FC, and Bankers were left bitterly disappointed with the result and their performance. But we move on to the next game which is at home vs. Penistone Church Reserves this Saturday.

Manager’s and Reporter’s Man of the Match: Mikey Russell – played with drive and energy in the middle of the park and showed his quality on a tough day for Bankers.
