By

Shirebrooks 2018/19 campaign got underway with a 0-0 draw away at Grimsby Borough

ATT 98

MOTM Cheeseman

Shirebrook were on the back foot from the get go with the home side having an early free kick that tested new Shirebrook goalkeeper Levi Owen but he managed to keep it out the home side kept pressing looking for the opening goal and Owen was called into action again in the 10th minute making a fine save from a header by the Grimsby number 9 it wasn't until mid way through the half that Shirebrook had their best chance of the half but Sam Dockwray saw his shot saved by the Grimsby goalkeeper Shirebrook looked dangerous on the break with Thomas Widdowson causing problems for the Grimsby defense and he almost unlocked the Grimsby defense but his cross was just to high for Robinson the get on the end of but as the half was drawing to a close Grimsby again were pushing but every effort they could muster they saw saved by Owen or was well wide of the bar and the sides went in goalless the break.

The second half started the same way as the first with the home side on top but again the Shirebrook defense managed to stand firm but the game changed in the 60th minute when play was halted for 20 minutes after a 50/50 tackle by Carter Widdowson saw Grimsby midfielder Renzie Lobendhan suffer a dislocated and potential broken ankle once play restarted Grimsby were obviously shaken and Shirebrook managed to create a few chances with Sam Dockwray again going close to opening the scoring but as the game drifted into the last 10 minutes Shirebrook had their best spell of the game with Sub Nathan Downes and center back duo Joe Cheeseman and Chris Timons all having chances to give Shirebrook the lead but in injury time all Shirebrook's hard work almost came to nothing when a shot from a Grimsby player looped inches over the bar but Shirebrook managed to keep the clean sheet and came home with a well earned point.

Shirebrook are back in action on Tuesday night for their first home game of the season when newly promoted Skegness Town visit Langwith Road 7:45 ko and they are on the road again on Saturday in FA Cup action as they visit Oadby Town 3pm ko
