Shortwood United FC were founded in 1900 and since then have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table land, Wallow Green and finally our current ground, Meadowbank.

The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, which includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Floodlights were installed in 1989 with a match versus Swindon Town commemorating their official launch. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions. This included refurbishment of the main stand, the erection of a new 50 seater stand opposite, new dug outs and turnstiles and overhaul of the dressing rooms. In 2010 a new pitch barrier was added giving Shortwood a ground to be proud of. The pitch has been improved over the years with new drainage recently added. With the hard work of the current groundsman the pitch has received many accolades including recognition by the FA in 2009 and 2010. During the 2013 close season new spectator toilets were built, including disabled facilities, and additional covered standing for 50 was also added.

Shortwood 2nds, as they were then known, were founded in 1948/49 and started off in the Stroud & District League. After gradually progressing through the divisions they became champions in 1980/81. They were then promoted to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Div 2 in 1981/82. After coming runners up in 1983/84 they were promoted to Div 1. In 1988/89 the Reserves had their first real taste of success, winning the Glos County Cup, beating Brockworth Albion in the final, at Slimbridge's Wisloe Road. They repeated the feat under manager Steve Hurn, winning again in 1990/91, this time beating Kings Stanley at Gloucester City’s Meadow Park. They also won the Stroud Charity Cup in the same year, again beating Kings Stanley in the final. Steve Hurn was promoted to 1st team manager and Ian Freebrey then took over as Reserve team manager, taking them to the final of the Senior Amateur Cup, where they came runners up to Lydrook Athletic. Freebs later left due to work commitments, and Tim Wilkins took the reins.

At the end of the 2008/09 season, with no manager and only a few players left it appeared to be curtains for Shortwood Utd Reserves. However, at the last minute, former U18 manager and ex Shortwood Utd player, Paul ‘Des’ Meredith, stepped in and agreed to manage the team for the 2009/10 season. He was later joined by another ex Wood player, Nick Ackland, as assistant manager. A hastily assembled team of former youth team players was put together and finished a creditable 9th out of 16 in 2009/10. The following season they were 3rd after being pipped to runners up by Broadwell Amateurs. In 2011/12 Shortwood Utd Reserves were crowned Glos Northern Senior League champions for the first time in their history. They beat Gala Wilton in their last game of the season, to snatch the title from Frampton Utd, having lost only 3 games all season.

This led to promotion to the Hellenic League Div 2 (West) in 2012/13, which they duly won as well. Dessie’s Ressies amassed 55 points out of 66, scoring 70 goals, on the way to the league title. Another promotion followed, to UHLSport Hellenic League Div1 (West), the highest level that they have ever played at.
