Pinley 28 - 31 Southam

By

Anothering white knuckle game for Southam, but they hold on for the win in a niggly game.

With a stiff breeze behind them Southam started well and kept Pinley in their own half. 10 minutes in as Pinley spread it on their 22 and centre Will Wood drove the Pinley centre back, wing Joe Tresendern followed in and got over the ball and forced the penalty for holding on converted by captain Will Grindal. After 26 minutes, full back Will Clarke took a pressure kick on the Southam 10m avoided the chasers and got back into the Pinley half, the ball was recycled and scrum Lewis Dodds broke left, stepped across two defenders and into space, Doods fed Grindal, who made ground into the Pinley 22, drew the last man and fed wing Sam Bench for the try, converted by Grindal. From the restart, Pinley put pressure on Southam, forced a scrum and then a penalty, got into the corner and from the line out catch and drove for the converted try. On 40 minutes, Southam won the ball back on the halfway and broke left, prop Matt Catterall made ground and fed Bench, who jinked through traffic over the Pinley 10m, Bench fed Catterall, who appeared on the wing and burst through over the 22, surrounded by 3 men, he still got the ball away to Dodds, who looped around the outside and over the line for the try, converted by Grindal. From the restart, Pinley got into the Southam 22, but knocked on, from the scrum followed a superb 95m try, the ball fed to fly half Tom Grimes, who instead of clearing his lines, ran from his 5m and found space and then threw what looked to the crowd to be a pass to nowhere, but the pass was perfect as out of the traffic, Wood took it and ran into space up to the Pinley 10m and fed Bench, Bench still had work to do and he had to fend of two defenders to get over in the corner for the try, converted by Grindal on 43 minutes. As the half finished on 48 minutes Pinley again got back into the Southam 22 and broke from a scrum, two Southam players hit the man and the ball spilled free to Grimes, he quickly spread the ball to Wood, who ran into space, Wood feinted out to Bench and then stepped back inside and left the defence for dead to complete a 75m try under the posts, converted by Grindal
HT 7 - 31

As the first half progressed the wind had increased and Pinley were going to use it, from the kick off Southam could not clear and Pinley chipped into the corner, recycled and drove over for a converted try after 6 minutes. From the restart Pinley used the wind again and from a mistake at the back, used the penalty to get a lineout in the corner. Southam defended to man and kept Pinley out for multiple phases, but eventually Pinley used their backs and just got over for the converted try. Six minutes later, Southam again could not clear a long kick, and for 5 minutes Pinley battered Southams line in the forwards, until Southam they ran out of men and after 18 minutes Pinley spread it to the fly half, who ran in under the posts for the converted try to get within 3 points of Southam. Things looked ominous as Pinley had been the using the wind and their big forwards to score every 6 minutes. But Southam were not down and out and so started a tremendous 25 minute defence, Southam laid their bodies on the line right across the team and time after time stopped Pinley at the line and won the ball back, initially they tried to clear their lines by kicking, but the wind was to strong and Pinley could just come straight back and so to get some breathing space Southam started to run from their own line at every opportunity, making it out to the halfway on occasions, but just making little mistakes as they looked to break free and giving possession back to Pinley to get back to their line. Pinley were getting a desperate and this led to their 2nd row being red carded for a punch on 2nd row Dave Harris. Again and again Pinley hammered the Southam line, but Southam held on with some in the face tackling until final whistle blew.
FT 28 - 31

Another rollercoaster ride for the Southam supporters, who watched a team under immense pressure, tackle themselves into the ground and get an amazing 5 point bonus win. All the team deserves a mention, as not one man failed to step up and throw their bodies into the big Pinley forwards, but the team plaudit goes to wing forward Jack Hewson, whose tackle count once again must have been in the high teens.
