As no one in the team had ever beaten Woodbridge at any age group expectations weren't high - but fortunately the spirit and commitment was.
The intensity in the first 5 minutes from Southwold sent a clear message of intent to a stunned opposition and we soon ended up 5m out from their line. On this initial occasion we failed to capitalise but it boosted our morale. No where more so than in the scrum where we dominated from the outset - despite Henry playing out of position in the front row.
Despite our possession Woodbridge found a gap in the centres and ran in a great try from the 30m+ out.
We then took back the initiative and camped in their 22 getting 3 consecutive penalties until finally Renee twisted through to score under the posts.
Equal spoils at half time with the scoreboard reading 7-7 ....so Woodbridge aren't unbeatable at this age group!
We started the second half like we did the first with total pressure and great ball retention giving Renee the opportunity to run in his second try, this time in the corner. Charles expertly converted it.
The next 5 minutes were much the same resulting in several penalties in their 22. Finally they collapsed a maul 5m out which gave Elliott the chance of a quick tap and go .. which he did and powered over to score. Charles added the 2 points.
Woodbridge then mounted a comeback but most of their penetrating attacks came from our mistakes and several of their forays in to our 22 came from hack throughs, one of which resulted in their second try.
At 21-14 the possession was then shared for the next 10 minutes, so when we were awarded a penalty just outside their 22, Charles sensibly chose to kick and duly added 3 points.
in the last few minutes of the game we found ourselves deep in their 22 again and with another couple of penalties around 5 m out. As Woodbridge line-up to repel Elliott from the penalty, he tipped it on to Charles who weaved around a few defenders and put the icing on the cake with our last try - which he also converted.
Thanks an congratulations to U16s Tom Howland and Anton Parocki for their first appearance for the Colts and thanks to Pete, Archie and Tom Holland who are now becoming regular Colts players! Also thanks to Renee and Henry for joining us during their half term break.
From 1 to 15 we put in an awesome performance today and every single one of the lads should take credit. This result bodes well for the rest of the season as we get players returning and as long as we can get everyone to training so we can build on our strengths and rectify our weaknesses.
MoM were joint skipper, Elliott, for both his performance and leadership and Renee bring that extra punch to the backs. Also a special mention for the other joint skipper, Charles, who scored half of our points.
