Luke White Goal Seals Another Impressive Tulips' Road Win

By

This result, which never looked in doubt once the Tulips edged in front, meant three wins on the bounce for Spalding United FC!...

Second-half goals by Danny Brooks and Luke White (see photo) helped the Tulips complete the double over their near-rivals Peterborough Sports on Monday and stretch their win sequence to three on the bounce in the NPL Evo-Stik South.

Once again the Tulips turned in a highly commendable performance to overcome the challenge of Sports side who were in close proximity in the league standings. Such was the standard of their play that goalkeeper Michael Duggan, on his 250th appearance for the club, was never seriously tested throughout.

By the interval the Tulips should perhaps, have held a comfortable advantage on the number of scoring opportunities created. But they had to wait until the 66th minute before breaking the deadlock with a superbly executed penalty by Daniel Brooks after the once again impressive Cenk Acar had been brought down just inside the home area.

Icing on the Tulips’ cake arrived in the third minute of added time from the boot of substitute Luke White following an assist from fellow sub Scott Floyd – both teenagers having been introduced to the action inside two minutes of each other just after the hour mark at the expense of James Hugo and Acar respectively.

White had in fact, had the ball in Sports’ net in the 78th minute but the strike was ruled out by a marginal offside decision.

From the outset, the Tulips pace and movement from back to front was posing problems, as were the long throws (usually the strength of the injured Matt Varley) of young James Hugo. One found the head of Ellis Humble whose effort was hacked clear of the line. Just a couple of minutes earlier a cross made under pressure by Acar sizzled across the home area without getting a touch.

Skipper Gary King’s 30th minute free-kick from 25-yards distance, rattled the woodwork with goalkeeper Dan George beaten. Before the interval George dived bravely at feet to smother another Tulips’ effort.

Early in the second-half the ever-dependable/combative Conor Marshall, enjoying a good game at right back, carved out an opening for Ben Davison who fired just over the bar from the edge of the area. And Jonny Lockie, who put in a good shift, was only denied a clear shot by the influential Richard Jones, playing at the heart of the Sports defence.

In their best spell in attack, former Tulip Avelino Viera worked his hardest to break the deadlock, but was never able to get too close to Duggan’s goal, save for one effort which fizzed just over the bar.

The goal the game desperately needed for the 186 in attendance arrived with Brooks’ penalty just after the hour mark. Play continued to be lively and closely contested but the result was never to be in doubt and although White’s 78th minute effort was overruled, his added time strike was one of pure class.
