SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE TOUCH SERIES; ROUND FOUR – ESSINGTON; 27TH JULY 2018.

By Steven McLuckie

Stafford Touch Rugby finish in 2nd & 3rd place in the fourth tournament of the South Staffordshire touch series … and retain 2nd & 3rd place overall!

A fantastic fourteen regular members from Stafford Wednesday night touch rugby took the journey over to Essington last Friday night for the fourth tournament of the South Staffordshire touch series. The players were accompanied by a small band of dedicated supporters & the always welcome photographer.

For the fourth round in a row Stafford fielded two teams which comprised of a broad cross section of players from the inexperienced through to rock steady veterans and all abilities in between. With two teams of seven the players prepared to take on ten other teams from Essington, Handsworth, Rugeley, Walsall, Wheaton Aston and Penkridge.

A warm evening provided the backdrop for an exhausting round of games which left all teams searching for any available oxygen to replenish desperate lungs. The evening ended with Stafford Bees taking four wins, and one loss to earn twenty-six points and taking third position on the night. One place ahead in second were Stafford Wasps with four wins and one draw earning twenty-seven points. With another series of strong performances, the travelling county town sides maintained their second & third places overall, both teams having won more games than leaders Handsworth but behind on points due to the number of female players fielded throughout the tournament.

A huge thanks to all Wasps & Bees players who turned out to represent the club. Special mention must be made to the Hogan clan for bringing a full half team, Jocelyn Turner, Megan Hogan, Zoe White for making their touch tournament debut and Adam, James & Richard for refereeing in-between games. Overall rankings, after four rounds are Stafford Wasps in second place and Stafford Bees in third.
