Confident Marys Win At Yeovil
By Rich Hynes
10 tries for Ladies
St Marys Ladies travelled to Yeovil this weekend looking to build on last week and came away with a really encouraging win. With numbers still low Marys welcomed back Kirsty Fido after a long lay off and gave debuts to
Boe Meaton and Vasilia Themis. Marys got off to a flier when from the kick off Abigail Berry collected and made good ground. An inside ball to skipper
Sophie Williams getting things moving before the impressive Joanna Smith took the return, dummied the full back and raced away from half way to score under the sticks. Conversion added, Marys up 0-7 after just a minute. 5 minutes later they were in again, this time flanker Sarah Barker racing away to just out run the covering defence. Jade ‘Gambo’ Gamlin on target again. 0-14. Marys really in top now and
Sophie Williams crossed next following good work at the breakdown by the loose forwards. Gambo slotted, 0-21. The good work continued with the side showing good continuity and following a good series of phases, Smith was able to trot in for her 9th try in 3 games. Another 2 points from the Gambo boot and the lead out to 0-28 after just 20 minutes. Yeovil then had a really good period of possession and made some strong carries before Marys re-established control. Back to solid plays and lots of space out wide for
Chloe Tucker to dot down. Gambo fluffed this one, and at half time the ladies were up 0-33. Second half with the challenges of 5 tries and none conceded being made, the side began strongly again. Tammy Howells on hand to cross after a real strong run. The ladies continued to work really hard and were rewarded with further scores from Howells, Fido and
Chloe Tucker (2) who completed her hat trick with the try of the game. Great ball won at the lineout, a really strong drive and then the ball shipped wide where Ellie O’Sullivan cut on of many impressive lines to draw the full back and put Tucker away. Final score 0-64. A very good day for St Marys who now put pressure on returning players for a start against Oakmedians who visit us on 7 Oct. Great work from Jade Gamlin, Sarah Barker and Abi Berry in the pack. Jo Smith, Choe Tucker and Tammy Howells all excellent in the backs. Player of the match this week was Ellie O’Sullivan who really grew into the game, made some great tackles and looked a real threat with ball in hand.
