Ton Up For Gambo

St Mary's started 2019 with a trip up the M5 to Hucclecote. When the two sides had met early in the season, Hucclecote had given a really strong showing and Mary's had prepared well with an excellent week's training. With a few backs unavailable Mary's reshuffled by bringing prop Danielle Hand into the centre and flanker Sarah Barker on to the wing. Flanker Sophie Williams also returned from injury making her first appearance since the sides first meeting in October. Kick off and Mary's started like a steam train. From an early line out they kept the ball and moved it from edge to edge with real confidence. 4 minutes later, having created space on both sides full back Chloe Tucker was put away for the first of what would be an excellent hat trick of tries. She was at it again after 11 minutes when she took the final pass from a series of excellent carries and width to cross. Jade 'Gambo' Gamlin added the extras for a 12 nil lead in as many minutes. Hucclecote then came back well looking to use their strong ball carriers and they had a good period of possession. Some hard tackles from the visitors and jackal opportunities on offer which they worked really well. With the homes sides response being extinguished the visitors went back on the attack. Again the continuity was excellent before second row Kaycie Mosley made a clean break and sold an excellent dummy to the full back before crossing unopposed under the sticks. Gambo on target with the extras. 0-19. Mary's were on the charge now and from a line out close in they caught and drove excellently to see flanker Kirsty Fido cross to make it 0-24. Then with the final play of the half, Mary's once again went looking for points and after they moved the ball to Kirsty Fido in the width she had the strength to hold off would be tacklers, ignore Joanna Smith, and cross for her second and Mary's 5th try of the half. Second half and Mary's faced a rejuvenated and confident Hucclecote who came flying out the blocks. Mary's were under a lot of pressure and the home side were starting to break tackles and threaten to score. Some good defence kept them out and the first 20 minutes was a bit of an arm wrestle between the two sides. Hucclecote had put in a huge effort and when Mary's got more possession they were able to take advantage. On 65 minutes Tucker completed her hat trick to score following an excellent set piece move and a really unselfish off load from Sophie Williams who had come on at 12 to take the score out to 0-34. But then Hucclecote were rewarded for their efforts when from a scrum they went blind, broke a couple of tackles and scored a well earnt try. Conversion added 7-34. Mary's as they have all season, reacted superbly from conceding and went back on the front foot. An excellent turnover from Vasilia Themis saw the ball moved away and fly half Gambo cut a strong line to power through and score close in. She converted he own try and then with a minute left she repeated the dose and cut through again showing great pace and strength to score close in. Conversion fluffed and as the final whistle blew, St Mary's were home 7-46. This was an outstanding effort from St Mary's who were pretty unplayable at times and are moving closer to their goal. There were some great performances today particularly from Kirsty Fido, Sarah Wray and Kaycie Mosley in the pack and stand in backs Danielle Hand and Sarah Barker in the backs. A special mention must go to Jade 'Gambo' Gamlin who took her points tally past 100 for the season,taking just 12 games to reach the milestone. Fantastic effort. Player of the match today was captain Sammy Knighton who moved to 9 and was absolutely brilliant. A real captain's performance, well done!!!
