BORROWASH VICTORIA 0 - 2 TEVERSAL FC

"Workmanlike Tevie Overcome Spirited Vics"

On a nice summer's evening with the temperature more accustomed to football, Borrowash started of the brighter side against a much changed Teversal side from the side that started with a home victory on Saturday against West Bridgford.

The first action came on 7 minutes when a long ball forward found Dave Cockerill on the corner of the 18 yard box to swivel and volley a goal bound effort with the Borrowash Keeper Soal was alert to tip the effort over the bar whilst diving to his left. The home side responded in a positive manner with Turner breaking into the box under pressure from Lewis Brown, with the attention of the defender enough to force the striker to fire wide of the mark. That was followed with Kane Samuel having a foray down the right flank, but again Lewis Brown's pressure was enough to prevent the effort materialising into nothing more than a good opportunity.

The more the game settled, the more possession Teversal started to have with the game settling into an even contest. It was Vics who created an opening when Turner found Collier who was denied by Rio Alberry saving with a brave block. At the other end Ben Cartwright had the time and space to produce a cross come shot that had Soul at full stretch to tip the effort over the bar.

The Tevie Boys raised the tempo to take control of the game with Jack Griffith's producing an excellent cross field ball to Ben Cartwright who played a well weighted pass into the path of Matt Wilkinson to fire a near post effort that Soal saved well at his near post. The game was spending more time in the Borrowash half. Teversal sustained the pressure with them probing for an opening. In that search an intuitive chipped pass from Danny O'Donnell picked out his midfield partner Joel Smith who ran from deep to latch onto the pass to lift it over the advancing Soal but marginally over the bar too.

On 42 minutes the Teversal pressure finally took its toll on the host, excellent ratting in midfield by Danny O'Donnell and Joel Smith saw them seize the ball back to them release Matt Wilkinson who calmly finished to add to his hat trick from the weekend. It was nearly 2-0 when an Danny O'Donnell corner was met by that man Matt Wilkinson whose powerful header smashed against the bar.

Like in the first period Borrowash started brightly and created two early opportunities, both from free kicks, the first Ablett headed effort went wide of the post. The second a free kick again from out wide by Cooper saw Spencer centre of the goal on the edge of the six yard box, the delivery was inch perfect just needing the slightest touch from what looked an offside position, but it was missed by the defender and with no flag it was a golden opportunity missed.

Teversal managed to weather the early storm to work their way into the half again with the wide players Ben Cartwright and Lewis Brown being a thorn in the Vics sides. Ben Cartwright cut in from the right to strike a fierce effort that Soal was happy to punch clear. This was the start of a period of sustained pressure with an onslaught coming down the right flank, but the crosses was marginally having too much on them to cause Borrowash greater pain. Yet on the other flank Lewis Brown timed his run a couple of times to perfection, but lacked a bit of composure to finish, something Wilkinson did too when released by Joel Smith's pin point through ball, then Dave Cockerill also managed to get in behind the Vics defence and lobbed the keeper from 40 yards but again only just over the bar.

Eventually the pressure paid off to double the lead for the Tevie Boys when Matt Wilkinson drove into the space before laying a pass in behind Cooper to free Ben Cartwright who broke into the penalty to draw Soal off his line before squaring to pick out Joel Smith to roll home from 6 yards to make it 2-0 to the Tevie Boys with 18 minutes to play.
Another opportunity came the visitor’s way when two of the subs combined, Greg Smith delivered an inch perfect cross that again neutralised the Keeper for his follow sub James Summer to head home, but unfortunately the header was guided wide of the far post.

Both sides played their part in an entertaining game, with Teversal always having that bit more and really deserved the three points, whilst Borrowash will have picked up a lot of positives from this showing.

On Saturday the Tevie Boys entertain Loughborough University in the Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round, 3:00pm kick off at Carnarvon Street.
