Thackley's Second Half Performance Earned Them The Win.

By

It was a Jekyll and Hyde performance that turned out well in the end.

Thackley 3 Hemsworth Miners Welfare 1.

In their final home game of the current season, Thackley’s opponents were Hemsworth Miners Welfare who were making their first ever visit to the Mitton Group Stadium at Dennyfield. The Wells had beaten Thackley in the final game of 2016 and this reverse fixture had been scheduled to have been played on three other occasions and had fallen foul of the weather each time. Craig Bentham, George Eustance and Sam Robinson were unavailable for this game and so Kris Hargreaves returned in defence and Luke Robinson to play wide on the left.

For the second game in succession the Dennyboys found themselves a goal down early on, when Richard Collier fired in from the edge of the box on four minutes. Again Thackley had started slowly and the away side were taking full advantage. They did conjure up a couple of long range efforts, Kris Hargreaves was wide and a Ryan Farrell shot was deflected for a corner but it was Hemsworth that looked the more dangerous. Luke O’Brien cleared off of the line following a corner and Bill Law fired narrowly wide. Thackley’s best chance to equalise came midway through the half, Pat McGuire putting Mike Garrod through, his shot across goal went just wide of the post. Hemsworth had a couple of corners that caused problems before Luke Wilson made a great save, palming away a goal bound Law header. Thackley had been second best in the first half, Hemsworth fully deserved their interval lead.

Half time: Thackley 0 Hemsworth Miners Welfare 1.

Thackley needed to improve on their first half performance and began to have more influence on the game at the start of the second. They got their reward about ten minutes in, Farrell hitting a low drive from the edge of the box, Hemsworth keeper, Sam Leigh, could only parry his shot and Garrod took full advantage, pouncing on the loose ball to hammer home. A couple of minutes later the Dennyboys went in front, this time it was Garrod with the shot, again Leigh could not hold onto the ball and Farrell got the tap in. It was a different game now, Hemsworth heads went down, Thackley were on top. A third goal seemed inevitable and it came on sixty eight minutes, a long ball knocked over the defence still left Garrod with plenty to do, but the Thackley striker held off his marker and fired an unstoppable shot past the diving Leigh. Adam Jones came on for Dan Broadbent before Luke Robinson missed a great chance to add his name to the score sheet, skying the ball over from just a couple of yards out after McGuire and Farrell had created the chance. Matt Broadley and Tawonga Gumboh made late appearances to help the Dennyboys maintained their lead and get a confidence boosting victory before their final two away games.

Full time: Thackley 3 Hemsworth Miners Welfare 1.

A Jekyll and Hyde performance from the Dennyboys in this match, Hemsworth were much the better team in the first half, once Thackley had equalised there was only going to be one winner.

Thackley travel to Bridlington on Saturday for their penultimate match of the season for what is likely to be one of their toughest so far. It will be the third meeting between the two sides this season, the previous two being at Dennyfield. The Seasiders knocked Thackley out of the League Cup, in the league fixture the game finished all square, both sides scoring three times.
