Where last week’s fare had been the cold soup from the festive buffet, this week was the piping hot turkey as Uddingston and Millbrae served up a feast of Christmas tries, sharing 15 between them, in a remarkable 52-52 draw.
With no roving reporter at the match the exact flow of the fixture is a little unclear. What is beyond doubt is the fact that the tries flowed, the kicks flew, and at the end of the day the draw seemed to have been the fair result.
With most rugby matches across the country falling to the combined efforts of storm Caroline and the deep freeze it was credit to Millbrae that the Ayr pitch was playable, and the 2 squads were given the opportunity to play some league rugby.
A series of injuries, combined with student exams, left the Villagers with a number of faces missing, and several more pressed into duty in unfamiliar positions. That said, the effort from all concerned was there to see, and what they may have lacked in defensive coordination they more than made up for when it came to scoring tries.
At the final count it was 8 tries and 6 conversions for the Villagers, while the home side were 1 less with 7 tries, but a 100% conversion ratio and a well struck penalty took the tally to 52-52.
Scoring honours for the Villagers fell to the usual suspects with Keith Bradley claiming a hat trick. Leading try scorer Chris King secured a brace, taking his season total to 20 so far. Clinton Boyd, Callum Maxwell and Willie Irvine provided 1 each, while King split the uprights with 6 of the 8 conversions.
The 3 points secured from the draw sees the Villagers move up to 3rd in the BT West Division 2 table as we move into the second half of the season. Given the fact that the squad were only promoted from Division 3 at the end of last season this has been a tremendous effort from all concerned.
Next Saturday, 16/12, the Villagers 1st and 2nd XV’s play host to Strathendrick. Having done the double on them at Fintry earlier in the season both matches promise to be crackers - weather permitting. Kick off 2pm for both matches.
