A Worrying Defeat for Walsall

Walsall 24 Spartans 28

This latest defeat has seen Walsall drop into the league’s relegation zone. The pressure is already building on the team and on the management to start producing match winning performances. This fourth league defeat of the season should have really been avoided as the host were guilty of squandering several try scoring opportunities. The visitors had the ideal start as the Walsall defence crumbled as centre Bushell went over for the first score. It wasn’t long before the hosts showed their attacking intent as fly half Will Hennessey scoped up a loose ball and outpace the defence from thirty meters. Roger Weston added the conversion and then a penalty to give his team a 14 – 10 advantage. Bushell, however, showed good strength and speed as he broke through the Walsall defence once again for another score. The visiting back division put together an effective attack as they scored their team’s third try just before half time. This time it was winger Wayne that got the touchdown with Westwood putting over his third conversion to give his team a 21 – 10 interval lead.
The second half saw the hosts being more competitive and it was captain Roger Weston that got his team back in the game. He supported a flowing attack which saw him go over for a try which he then converted. He was back in action immediately from the restart as he jumped high to take the ball. He then used his strength and speed to go through the first line of defence and link up with Dave Merlin. The back row forward had enough pace and power to go over for the touchdown. Weston’s conversion then gave his team a 24 – 21 lead. During the ensuing fifteen minutes the hosts had further try scoring opportunities, but were guilty of losing possession or failing to deliver the vital try scoring pass. Walsall were still leading with seven minutes left to play. Spartans, however, pressed forward and the hosts conceded a five meter scrum. Foulds showed good control at the base of the visitor’s scrum and secured the touchdown which Westwood converted to give his team the win and move them up to third position in the league. Walsall, meanwhile, will be concerned for the fitness of some of their players as another four were forced to leave the field on saturday as a result of injuries!
