Waverley bowl over Elstead.

By

Mog does the batting business, as bowlers share the wickets.

Despite warnings of road closures, there were none to be seen as Waverley made the trip to Elstead. Turning out for the visitors were Adrian Day (Mog), Russ Golding (Tenerife Terry), Simon Brewer (KV), Andy du Gay (Daddy Doogs), Matt du Gay (Doogs), Jamie Harris (Teabag), Chris Beanland (Beanie), Kyle Moxham (Foxy), Sam Tempest (Troy), Matt Pride (London) and Peter Brewer (Mr B).

Doogs unsurprisingly lost the toss, and the Wave were asked to bat first on what looked to be a very good track. Mog and Tenerife Terry were tasked with opening up the batting and both looked in good form early on, putting away any bad deliveries. Tenerife Terry was the first batsman dismissed though, getting the thinnest of edges through to the keeper and very sportingly walking when the keeper confirmed the edge. This brough KV to the crease, fresh from consecutive unbeaten centuries in his past two Waverley innings. He was unable to make it to three on the trot though, holing out for 5. Daddy Doogs was next in, but he was castled quickly after, only adding one run to the score. At this point Waverley looked to be in trouble, with some tight bowling restricting the visitors to 34-3. Mog was still ticking over nicely though, and some mid-order runs from Doogs and Teabag helped to push the Waverley score up towards 100. Mog soon reached his half century and Waverley looked to be in a position to kick on and post a big score. However, Mog was soon out for a very well made 62 and some good bowling from Elstead meant Waverley lost their final 5 wickets for the addition of just 27 runs. The visitors ending up all out on 159, from just shy of their 40 overs.

After an excellent tea, Waverley looked to defend their total. Beanie and Teabag were given the new ball, and both were putting it through very nicely early on. It was Beanie who made the breakthrough in his second over, castling S Luke. The Waverley opening pair continued to bowl very well for not many runs, and Teabag was soon among the wickets as well, Tenerife Terry holding on to a catch behind the stumps. Beanie added another wicket in the next over, rearranging another batsman's stumps with a beauty of a delivery.
Doogs shuffled his pack and introduced Foxy and London, both of who continued the miserly economy rate. London bagged a wicket just before the drinks break, Tenerife Tezmo holding on to a high catch. Foxy was bowling well at the other end, and he too grabbed a well deserved wicket, clean bowling S Fishburn. With plenty of bowling options, Doogs shuffled his pack again and introduced Mr B and Troy. 11 year old S. Holland had been batting superbly for the home side, playing some nice looking shots and putting away anything loose. He was eventually undone by a flighted delivery from Mr B, Doogs taking the catch at mid on. Stephenson had been finding the boundary at the other end, and looked like he might cause a few problems for Waverley, with Elstead creeping closer to their total. However, he was trapped LBW by Troy for 29 and the home sides charge faltered somewhat. Mr B grabbed an LBW, and Doogs (Elmer Fudd) came on to lob a few up and also picked up a wicket. The final wicket fell when Beanie held on to a catch at long on, giving Mr B his 3rd wicket of the day.

An excellent bowling display saw wickets for all of the bowlers, all well deserved. The post match awards saw the pink t-shirt go to Beanie for complaining about a bruised thigh from a 'nasty 13 year old'. The man of the match hat went to Mog for his excellent innings, which pushed the Waverley total to defend-able levels. The wAnchor hat had initially been awarded to London for being the only player to drop a catch, but the decision was overturned when he reminded Doogs of an earlier offence by Troy. A solo appeal off his own bowling for an LBW, despite the batsman getting a huge inside edge on the ball first.

All in all it was a good performance from the mighty Wave, enough to earn a third win on the bounce.
