Waverley bowled over by Oakley

By

Waverley finally took to the field after a two week absence following two cancellations but were left wondering why they had bothered...

Defying the forecast, Sunday was a wonderful day for Gods finest sport with no sign of the heavy rain of the previous day. With a full XI, the Wave arrived in good spirits and were looking forwards to the afternoons play.

It was on this day that our illustrious skipper attempted to cultivate a new identity for himself in the eyes of the opposition. "Hello, my name's James" he said to the opposing captain by way of introduction. Unfortunately, this was said within earshot of the rest of the team who descended in to laughter before informing the Oakley captain to call him Jim, Jimbo or Oaf. It was only after the pair retreated off to the middle to toss that Litwin reminded the group that the Oaf was in fact called Alex, not James!

Following a conversation in the middle Waverley opted to field first with Adrian Day (Mog) and Sam Tempest (Troy) opening the bowling. A sign of things to come arrived with the first ball, Mog being dispatched for 4 through mid-wicket. The second ball lead to the same result and the visitors settled in for a long afternoon in the field. Despite bowling on a decent line, neither bowler enjoyed much success with the hosts who exploited the fast outfield and short boundaries. Potter made his way to 50 by the 10th over without much difficulty but soon after Troy found the edge which flew low to Pete Brewer at gully, the septuagenarian fell forwards for the catch only for it to fall fractionally short and the batsman stole a single. In typical fashion, having waited a long time for a sniff of a chance, two came in two balls. Troy finding the edge of Sumner's bat the very next ball straight through to Simon Brewer behind the stumps who couldn't cling on.

A breakthrough finally came following a bowling change. Mallory Short bowling a rank full toss that Sumner hit straight to James Wright. As is often the case, one led to two and Potter followed soon after with Ben Harris forcing an edge through to Simon who pouched it (leaving Troy seething quietly to himself!). A third followed quickly when Mal bowled Rabley, however, the ball bounced twice before reaching the young batsman and after the umpires conferred a no ball was called. A change in the laws this year means that if the ball bounces twice before reaching the batsman a no ball should be called (Law 21.7 Ball bouncing more than once, rolling along the ground or pitching off the pitch. The umpire shall call and signal No ball if a ball which he/she considers to have been delivered, without having previously touched bat or person of the striker bounces more than once or rolls along the ground before it reaches the popping crease) The wicket fell soon after through, clean bowled again by Mal (but fairly this time!). Now 140-3, Waverley were on a roll. It was 140-4 two balls later when Mal claimed the wicket of Bennett, clean bowled again, and then Pete Brewer claimed two more (Dimmond LBW and Fuller bowled) reducing the hosts to 185-6. Gary Thorogood claimed the 7th wicket of Kancharla courtesy of Ben Harris's catch but a late flurry of runs from King and van Dyke propelled Oakley to 228-7 at the end of their 40 overs. Special mention needs to be made of our captain (don't call me Jim call me James) for his fielding efforts. Having intercepted the straight drive towards the end of the innings, and seeing the batsmen attempting a suicidal single, our illustrious skipper attempted to 'Jonty Rhodes' the run out (see here if you don't get the reference!). Having charged with the ball to within a few yards of the stumps, Jim released the ball for a simple run out...only for the ball to disappear off in the direction of Pete at Gully!

Waverley started their innings strongly with Jim putting the opening bowler for 4 through cover off the first ball but things then deteriorated quickly. Barnes claimed the Waverley captain off the first ball of his second over when his short pitched ball kept low while Jim rocked back to pull. M Carmichael was also claimed in that over, again by the shorter ball that shot through at ankle height and Ben Harris fell in Barnes' third over, getting his aggressive drive all wrong and losing his middle stump as a result. At 22-3, Waverley were in all kinds of trouble and with the 4th wicket of Chris Beanland falling in the 8th over the changes of a win were diminishing rapidly. Simon Brewer began to attack the bowling and it appeared to be game on again. With Si making short work of the bowling he moved quickly to 48 before being claimed be a spectacular catch by Sumner on the long-on boundary. Thorogood fell shortly after and at 85-6 Waverley's goal became to to reach triple figures. Connor Freeman became the 7th wicket to fall but some resilient batting by Adrian Day and Malory Short took Waverley to 125 before Mal was out caught at mid-off and Adrian was out bowled soon after going for the expansive drive. Sam Tempest and Peter Brewer took Waverley through to the final over but Troy holed out off the first ball leaving Waverley well short of the target.

Before the awards for the game there was a special award of the Anchor hat for vice-captain Chris Beanland who failed to inform AC of last weeks cancellation at Aldershot resulting in him making the 80 mile round trip to a deserted ground. With that taken care of the awards for Oakley took place. Mallory was awarded man of the match for her spell of bowling and solid batting display. Connor was awarded the pink t-shirt for selective poofery (jumping out the way of the ball when Mog was bowling but valiantly putting himself on the line when his girlfriend bowled) and Jim awarded himself the Anchor hat for his run out attempt (playing fast and lose with the word 'attempt' I feel!).
