Dramatic finish to hard fought game

The winning runs came from the final ball against Lynchmere

As is becoming worryingly typical for this weekend each season, Waverley struggled to get 11 for their game and the picturesque Lynchmere. Having arrived with 9 we were quickly up to 11 thanks to two keen youngsters from our hosts, 10 year olds James and Edward. A notable mention as well to our esteemed chairman who dug out his whites the night before in order to play and help protect the fixture.

Waverley lost the toss and were made to bowl first on a warm afternoon. Despite getting up to full strength we were forced to take to the field with only 10 after Same Tempest discovered he had forgotten to pack his kit. With the Anchor hat in hand, he returned home to get his whites (fortunately not a long journey) and was bale to take to the field 20 minutes into the game.

With our opening bowler in his car going home a change to the norm was required. Adrian Day took the first over as usual and Chris Beanland was talked out of his self imposed exile of 2 years to return to the opening attack. It was as if he had never stopped, getting the ball to swing awkwardly and he was rewarded during his second over, dismissing the opener Hill for 2 courtesy of a catch by skipper Jim Wright (still injured from the week before but battling on for the good of the team!) Adrian and Beanie kept the bowling tight but without further reward. Beanie nearly claimed a second wicket but the ball, coming quickly off the edge, was juggled at first slip before eventually going down.

Finally making in to the field in the correct attire Sam took up the ball. An LBW shout first ball was turned down but the second ball beat the batsman all ends up to remove the other opener. At 37-2 Waverley were taking control. A dogged partnership between Taylor-Gooby and Clarke frustrated the bowlers for a while before Clarke was run out by Beanie, having first fumbled a catching opportunity. The incoming Forde threatened to take the game away from Waverley with some big hitting but the return of Beanie to the attack claimed the wicket, bowled. Taylor-Gooby had made his way past 50 by this point but was run out soon after following a mix-up between the batsman. Beanie claimed his 3rd wicket of the game, bowling Hedges for 0 and the hosts innings finished soon after for a respectable 158 and a track that proved tricky to bat on.

A fine tea was enjoyed before Waverley took to the crease to begin that chase. Jim's cracked ribs saw him again drop down the order with Marcus Carmichael opening alongside Beanie. The opening bowling of Cain and Varnes was tight presenting few opportunities to score and Waverley settled in for a turgid afternoon of batting. Beanie was the first to fall, edging behind off Cain in the 9th Over. MC and A Day dug in and scratched around at the crease but still found runs hard to come by, at the start of the final 20 overs Waverley only had 45 on the board. A bowling change by the hosts saw Saulet and King introduced, the former getting some vicious leg spin from the off causing all sorts of problems for MC and Mog while King was getting the ball to bounce in all sorts of unpredictable ways. Despite this, Waverley shuffled along and MC made his way to 50. The second wicket finally fell in the 28th over with the score on 91, MC going back to smear the half tracker through the leg side only to see it shoot along the floor and hit middle. A minor panic then followed with Simon Brewer being dismissed for 10, caught out in the deep, and Mog being given LBW for 18 leaving the visitors 108-4 and needing 50 from the final 7 overs. Andy Du Gay and Jim were now at the crease and started to push the score on before the skipper called for a second that daddy Doogs wasn't planning on leaving him well short of the crease. While the skipper was blameless for that run out, he down right through Sam under the bus of the final ball of the penultimate over, calling a single when the fielder had the ball in his hands just a few yards from the stumps. Waverley had forced the score along and required just 5 from the final 6 balls. The opener, Cain, was back on to bowl and the first two balls yielded no runs. The 3rd ball was wide and Jim Wright and guest player Edward scampered 2 runs. The next 3 balls also yielded no runs leaving Waverley needing 3 from the last ball which Jim cracked off the back foot square and straight ot the fielder on the boundary. The ball bounced awkwardly, spinning up and catching the fielder on the chest and the resulting back spin then took it back towards the boundary, limping over for 4. Waverley had won!

The Anchor had had been a foregone conclusion from the start, forgetting ones kit being the ultimate offence, and MC was awarded man of the match for his 61. There was no poofery on display (a rare occurrence indeed!) so the pink t-shirt was not awarded.
