Eversley Match Report

By Matt du Gay

Bank holiday downpour leads to disappointment.

Despite the heavy rain which seemed to guarantee the game would be called off, Waverley received no such message from the oppo. Consequently, a number of Waverley's finest headed to Eversley to see if some miraculous break in the weather would allow some cricket. Such a break never materialised, and neither did the Eversley players, leading Waverley to play 'fantasy cricket' in the pub using a random number generator, as the real-life game was clearly not going ahead.

Waverley batted first in the fantasy game, with Mongo and Mog opening up the batting. The pair went off like a steam train, with Mongo passing his half century in just the 6th over, with Mog also ticking along nicely at the other end. The onslaught continued, until Mongo was out, jug avoiding on 97 (despite not hitting a single 6). Mog followed shortly after, also jug-evading for a well made 49. KV and Russ were at the crease, and they kept the run rate ticking along nicely, before both being castled in consecutive overs for 61 apiece. Baz strode to the middle and looked to continue the damage, as he found the boundary with consistent ease. Doogs was also playing well at the other end and both batsmen passed their half centuries. Doogs was eventually out for 66, bringing DJ Teabag to the crease. He also fancied the bowling and kept the seemingly ludicrous Waverley run rate up. When Baz eventually fell for 90, it looked like Waverley might collapse, as both Beanie and Pridey came and went for 13 and 2 respectively. Loz helped to steady the ship though, eventually falling after a well made 27. Teabag was also batting well at the other end, and Mr B came in to fling the willow for the last wicket. He did so well, and smote several monstrous blows, before finally holing out for 83, leaving Teabag unbeaten on 58.
7 Waverley players passed the 50 mark in an unforgettable innings from the visitors, in which they posted a final total of 678.

Eversley's task looked almost insurmountable, but they set about their chase with great enthusiasm, despite not actually being at the ground and none of this really taking place. Grumpy quicks Teabag and Beanie opened up for Waverley, Beanie somehow taking 4 wickets for just 1 run in his 2 over spell. Teabag was a bit more expensive, being hit for 44 off his 2 overs, but also picking up 5 wickets in the process. Pridey offered a massive amount of control, with his 7 overs leaking just 3 runs, but unfortunately yielding no wickets. Mr B was unlucky not to pick up a wicket from his 10 over spell, which went for 80 runs. Doogs and Baz came into the attack, Baz unfortunately being targeted for demolition as his 1 over went for 31 runs. Doogs was a little more economical, his 7 over spell going for 32 runs, with no wickets. Russ had a brief blast with the ball but didn't pick up any wickets either. Loz stepped up to the mark to pick up the final Eversley wicket, with the last ball of her second over, despite being subjected to a bit of tap, conceding 55 runs. There were also a mammoth 378 extras scored by the home team, every single one a leg bye.

Waverley just edged this fantastical 1300 run thriller, eventually taking the last wicket with Eversley just 7 runs short.

Man of the match went to teabag for his 5 wickets and unbeaten half century. The wAnchor hat went to Jim for being the only batsman who scored 50 to not hit a 6, and the pink t-shirt went to Doogs for complaining about a blister on his thumb.

Hopefully the next Waverley fixture will be much more realistic....
