Weekend Review - Weirs Fail to Channel Their Inner Ronnie Radford

By Colin Baxter

Weirs couldn't pull off a cup shock against Heriots, despite a decent effort with the bat.

Weirs played in their first ever Scottish Cup Quarter Final against reigning CSL Champions Heriots FP. On a glorious day at Goldenacre Weirs won the toss and batted first. Although they were soon in trouble at 30 for 3, star opener Sameer Zia stood firm and patiently built a fine innings.

Sameer batted brilliantly throughout the whole innings, finally being out to the last ball of the 50th over. He received good support along the way from Saleem Sajjad and Mo Ali as Weirs built a very respectable total of 200 for 8 off 50 overs.

As Heriots began their innings it soon became clear that 200 wasn't going to be enough though. The Heriots batsmen, especially Meiri took full toll on any bowling that was even a little wayward. Although the Weirs bowlers beat the bat a few times they could never find an edge. Heriots got home for the loss of just 1 wicket and over 18 overs to spare.

Nonetheless it has been a great cup run for Weirs that has helped to raise the profile of the club.

Before that game however Weirs took on GHK in the League at Albert Park on Saturday. Sameer Zia was also in fine form in that game, making 91 as Weirs posted 231 for 8 in 50 overs. GHK never really threatened to chase that target down, being bowled out for 158 with Saleem Sajjad taking 3 wickets.

The 2nd XI were also in action on Sunday against Hillhead but Hillhead proved too strong. Albert Park were bowled out for just 84. Hillhead chased the runs for the loss of 5 wickets.
