Winless Weekend for Weirs

By Colin Baxter

Disappointingly Weirs weren't able to register a single victory at the weekend.

Weirs faced East Kilbride at Albert Park in the 1st XI game which also meant facing a number of former Weirs players. Weirs batted first and battled to 181 all out. Yet again, Sameer Zia top scored, this time with 40. Mo Afzal weighed in with 28 as the Weirs tail did some useful wagging. Weirs old boys Saleem Sabir and Moeen Iqbal both took 3 wickets.

181 is the type of total that can be defended at Albert Park but today Weirs couldn't make enough early breakthroughs. EK opener Imran Mughal batted very impressively for 81 and with yet another former Weirs player, Qasim Sheikh keeping him company at the other end the visitors seemed to be making very easy progress to the victory target. Mo Ali gave Weirs some hope by removing both Mughal and Sheikh but EK eventually got home for the loss of 6 wickets.

It wasn't so close at New Williamfield where the 2nd XI suffered a heavy defeat against Stirling County. The home side batted first and racked up a very impressive total of 301 for 6 off 50 overs, Carswell and Ware both making half centuries. Wickets fell quickly in the Albert Park reply and they never looked like threatening the large target. There was at least some fine hitting late on the innings from Mohammed "Shael" Zafar to bring the total into 3 figures but Albert Park eventually fell to defeat by 197 runs.

To round off a disappointing weekend on the field Weirs lost to Victoria by 6 wickets in the Sunday League at Albert Park.

The weekend wasn't a dead loss though as the annual Weirs Quiz Night on Saturday was a great success. Again our players showed that though we might not be invincible on the cricket field we're tough to beat at drinking.
