Yarnbury v Wath

By

match report by John Rawson

Yarnbury showed character and steel to record a well earned win to begin 2019 against a strong Wath outfit pushing for promotion from the League at Brownberrie Lane .Missing three experienced back row forwards experienced Ian Maycock took the No8 spot at the back of the scrum and had two young committed back rowers in support in George Bowen and Calum Fawcett providing pace at the breakdown. The pack had a settled look about it and with Peter Tennant back as substitute prop gave much relief to the hard worked front row of John Dodgson,Chris Doyle and Richard Lister something lacking in recent games. In the back line Yarnbury welcomed back from injury Joe Pinnick on the wing and James Endersby in the centre to partner Captain James White. All in all a tough looking opposition to Wath. The South Yorkshire side were the only team to dominate Yarnbury in the first half of the season in the away fixture when an inexperienced squad made the trip there.

Wath had success previously with their big pack ably commanded by experienced scrum half Joe Bartlett and would be a handful for this fixture but it was the backs who looked dangerous in this League encounter. For the first 10 minutes Yarnbury had the pressure collecting their own kick off after a fumble by Wath and remained on the offensive for the first ten minutes missing opportunities to score with the final passes going astray with the line beckoning.Wing forward George Bowen broke the line but the ball was dislodged and a final pass in the left side corner went behind winger Josh bell with the line beckoning.

As in the first half of the season the opposition finally got in the game and were more careful with the ball and after a poor clearance to touch by Yarnbury Wath drove forward through their forwards and then moved the ball wide right for full back Tom Quinn to come into the line to hand off and score the first try.Stand Off Jack Whitlam missing narrowly with the conversion. Two scrums were wasted in attacking positions with good cover from the opponents and Yarnbury were being penalised by the exchange referee constantly at this stage loosing advantage cheaply when in good positions. Whitlam increased the lead to 0-8 with a penalty before Yarnbury came roaring back at the end of the half with a sweeping move from a Wath kick out of defence gathered by full back Will Marshall and attacked the line putting winger Joe Pinnick through the gap and passing on to stand off Danny Pound who stepped experienced scrum half Bartlett to glide under the posts .Will Marshall made no mistake with the conversion after just failing with an earlier penalty.A cracking half of rugby from two committed sides.

Yarnbury gave away a slack penalty immediately on the restart and then went close under the posts after another Joe Pinnick break while Whitlam missed a penalty for Wath.Yarnbury were looking good for another score and a break by Ian Maycock put second row James Falgate into a good position 10 metres out and with space touched down for yarnbury’s second try and Marshall converting put Yarnbury in front on 55 minutes. A run out of defence from dangerous winger Joe Jewell evaded tacklers and scored in the corner as Wath looked to dominate and with Whitlam converting to give the opponents a slight lead at 14-18 the last quarter would be crucial.Jewell was tackled short again after a good run before Yarnbury captain was held up over the line but Yarnbury pack were not to be outdone by the backs and prop Richard Lister took the ball five metres from the line and took several would be tacklers to the line with a determined run and touch down at the posts and with Marshall converting gave Yarnbury the win as they held out for the final minutes for a needed win.
