Next up - Brightlingsea Regent away on Tuesday, 21st February at North Road, CO7 0PL, Ryman Isthmian League Div 1 North. Kick off 7.45pm.
Regent are unbeaten in 2017, in fact since Boxing Day when they lost 3-2 at Dereham. Since then their 11 league games show just two draws interrupting a winning sequence. If it is daunting to note that one of those wins was against leaders Maldon & Tiptree who got the better of Ware on Saturday then we can take comfort from the fact that the two draws were against teams at the wrong end of the table - Soham away and Brentwood at home.
That run of success has taken Regent to second place in the table and comes from good team work based around fast, hard football. We will also need to watch out for throw-ins anywhere in the final third as they are as good as a corner to them.
We have met just twice before when they first came up to step 4 in 2014/5. There were home wins in two close fought matches that might both have ended in draws if the football gods cared about possession and territory but we all know they don't. Our year in the Southern League kept us apart in 2015/6.
Their ground is in the centre of housing virtually guaranteeing decent gates. The drawback for away fans is that Brightlingsea is towards the east coast past Colchester where decent road connections tend to fade away. If you're going, go early and make sure the sat nav is set correctly (their post code is above) and listen carefully to its instructions when you're passing through or round Colchester.
Enjoy the game!
