The big kick-off
Reds’ supporters have been looking forward to 15 August since the fixtures were released over a month ago. Now, the big day us upon us with Sutton Coldfield Town the opening day visitors to Borough Park for the eagerly awaited Evo-Stik Premier Division encounter.
It will be a first ever meeting between the clubs with the Birmingham outfit making their longest trip of the season on the first Saturday. They were promoted via the play-offs (defeating Newcastle Town and Leek Town in the process) after finishing 4th in Evo-Stik First Division South.
A team who ended last season with a flourish will, no doubt, be tough opponents for a Workington team who have only recorded an opening day win twice in the last ten seasons.
With a full squad to choose from, the speculation on team selection will end when the manager completes the team sheet an hour before kick-off.
Having appointed Gari Rowntree as captain for the new season, it is safe to assume he will wear the number 3 shirt with the latest recruit, Joe McGee, also expected to start.
Joe played seven games for Reds during a loan spell from Morecambe in 2013, scoring a spectacular goal on his debut at Colwyn Bay. Last season, he returned to Borough Park and played for Buxton, laying on the winning goal in their 2-1 victory. More recently, he has spent pre-season on trial with AFC Fylde and FC Halifax Town.
Fellow new signings Alex Mitchell, Rob McCartney and James Earl will be included in the squad.
Supporters will see a spruced-up Borough Park, with the ‘old lady’ having undergone a make-over thanks to the efforts of a loyal band of volunteers who have put several gallons of paint to good use.
