New player Toby Bertola comes in at No 6, Jack Richards retains his berth in the front row, Adam Bramhall comes in to the centre, Tyler Brace switches to No 8 for injured Harry O'Loughlin, Jack Hennessy is back on the wing and Matt Brookes takes the 15 slot. 4 changes from last week!
Today we welcome Liverpool St. Helens for our first home game in S. Lancashire/Cheshire Division 1.
The club, in its first incarnation, was founded in 1857 which makes it “the oldest open club in the world”, according to some. Of course, there are other claimants to this prestigious by-line, notably Blackheath, but most agree that LSH deserve the honour. In their long and distinguished history, they have produced many international players and, in the person of their President, they have one of the few players who have represented their country in both the League and Union codes.
Liverpool merged with St. Helen’s RUFC in 1986 and have played at Moss Lane for thirty years. Like many sides, they struggled in the professional era, and have been up and down the northern leagues.
We have a close connection because LSH was one of Simon Mason’s many clubs and Anselmian coaches, “Taff” Jones and Dave Buttery, both had distinguished playing careers there.
Last week, while we lost at Southport, LSH were battling a robust Douglas side at home and were losing 21-11 when they grabbed an injury time converted try which gave them a losing bonus point.
It promises to be a close game today.
