The Saints take on old rivals Truro in the 3rd meeting this season having twice been victorious in the away league and cup fixtures.
Saints have found it difficult to recapture their pre-Christmas form in 2018 losing at St Ives and at home to Tiverton while the most recent match against Torquay Athletic was abandoned due to serious injury to a Torquay player, the match has incidentally been ordered to be replayed.
There is no doubt that both losses were deserved and we were not at our best but neither were we too much off the pace. At Alexandra Road a rampant St Ives just beat us 23-17 despite losing 2 key players within 20 minutes while we were within 3 points of Tivvy who won 15-18. Against Torquay we were pushing hard in the final 15 minutes and were deep within their 22 when the game was rightly abandoned, while nobody could guarantee we would score we certainly looked a real threat.
Truro are working their way into some decent form having just lost 12-10 to a good Camels side and will have been glad of the Christmas break to regroup and refocus on the new year fixtures. As always they will be up for the game and looking to put one over on us at Tregorrick Park.
While we won’t panic we are also aware that derby games bring their own special pressures as teams raise their game and league form often goes out of the window. They were tough when I played pre-league and continue to be challenging. There is no real secret to winning these games though. They are inevitably physical and the side who retains their player and playing discipline while delivering their game in that derby-day intensity often comes out on top.
It should be a day of high drama and good craic so why not come up and support the lads in a real Cornish derby… COYS !!!!
