Game two of the new season and a few nerves may have been settled by an opening day win against a strong and determined Paignton side.

This Saturday we travel to Saltash also known as ‘The Ashes’. They are one of the new boys in this year’s Western Counties West league. They have similar roots to us in terms of they started off playing on a borrowed pitch in the late 60’s whilst using the local Railway Hotel to drink in after. They moved to their current ground at Moorlands Lane in 1982 where, from experience, a warm welcome awaits anyone visiting.

Notably Saltash travelled on the 25th August to new boys in SW1 and our foes of last season Devonport Services. They went to the Rectory for a pre-season fixture and successfully turned them over. This raised a few eyebrows here at Tregorrick when the result filtered through so eyes were on the results page last Saturday to see who was achieving what. Saltash did not get off the start they would have wanted falling to a heavy defeat at Sidmouth 64-7. Its early days yet and they perhaps need time to adjust to this leagues pace and intensity.

Saints delivered what we all wanted on Saturday which was an opening win to a new season. In fact three St Austell sides ran out on Saturday and delivered three wins so from the perspective of being a rugby club that is job done and done well! It should be remembered that Saints took a much-changed side to Sidmouth for the final game of last season and suffered a similar score line to Saltash so they won’t be writing off Saltash at all as Sidmouth could well be this year’s force to be reckoned with in this league.

Kyle Marriott shares his thoughts post Tuesday training: ‘It was a hard fought win over Paignton in the opening game with lots of positives. We have had another good training week and continue to develop and are fully aware of the threat Saltash poses this weekend. It is their first home game after being promoted into the league and it is important for us to be ready for that as much mentally as physically. Hopefully we can take some traveling support to act as our 16th man. COYS!’

It’s lining up to be an exciting fixture on Saturday. Saints make a couple of changes to the bench with notably Rob Jeffs getting a call-up. Many of those that travelled to Redruth for the pre-season agreed that Rob had a good game and indeed would have been a contender for man of the match in their eyes so its great to see effort being recognised.

Its just under an hour along the A38 to Moorlands Lane (driver/car/traffic dependent...please don't speed!). Those who can it’s going to be a great boost for the players to see friendly faces in the crowd so I hope you are able to travel. Lets see if we can dampen the Ashes?

If you are unable to travel to Saltash we have the Colts playing Penryn/Falmouth at 1130 at Tregorrick Park and the Sinners travelling to Camborne for part 2 of their cup fixtures with them KO 2.30pm. Please support either if you can.

Parish Notices:

Cornwall U18’s v Plymouth College is happening at 7pm on Friday 7th Sept at 7pm. Great chance to start the weekend with a bonus game. It’s free and the bar will be open. Also we will show the Northampton v Harlequins game on the telly if you fancy coming up.

Saints 100 Club – We had a number of membership forms for the 100 club filled out on Saturday and Sunday but more is needed! Please consider doing this…Its £5 a month with the chance of winning one of three cash prizes a month. The printable form and rules are HERE. Fill it out, place it in an envelope marked ‘100 Club’ and hand into any club officer, over the bar or at the gym reception. The money that we make from it goes into our #SaintsFamily rugby fund which is explained HERE. It’s intention is to help promote rugby activities at Tregorrick so a great and appropriate cause!

We still need a match report writer! What you are seeing on the website to date is more cobbled than authored and its by people hard pressed on other matters. Do not worry if your writing skills aren’t up to national paper back-page standard. Even the bare bones of a report can be turned around by others here into something pretty special so please do consider it…It can be very satisfying seeing your work being published online! Details are HERE.

Pre-Match Lunches – There was a surge in bookings for the 15th September Sidmouth home fixture pre-match lunch last Saturday at the Paignton game. If you were thinking about attending then today is the day to act By emailing Tich Preston and booking seats. Others have also sold out now leaving the seats available pre-Christmas looking quite bare! Get in touch and book this seats! How to do this and what happens/content of one of our pre-match lunches is HERE.
