After a week off from league competition, the Hurricanes return for their first home fixture in four weeks, as they welcome Overton RFC to the Fairway, a side that was promoted into Hampshire 1 this season.
Despite the break in the league fixtures, there was still action to be played the past weekend, as Sandown & Shanklin travelled away to Fordingbridge RFC in the Hampshire Plate. A resilient Hurricanes side came back from behind to secure passage through to the Quarter Finals of the Plate, in which, it looks set that they will play Locksheath Pumas in the next round, on the weekend of the 18th November. In a moment of sheer coincidence, Overton were knocked out of the competition by the Locks Heath Pumas this past weekend.
There will be some tough selection dilemmas for the Hurricanes this weekend, with a number of lads putting their hands up in the cup for a spot in the squad this Saturday. Three notable decisions to be made will be over Scrum-half Jacob Jordan, Flanker Harry Hopper and Fullback Sam Tyson. Jacob is unavailable this weekend, after a strong showing in the cup. And Tyson is still struggling with an elbow injury, sustained in the victory over the Isle of Wight two weeks ago. Hopper likewise is struggling with a shoulder injury, which he has been battling within the past few weeks.
Stand in Captain from the weekend, Sam Flux had this to say:
"A lot will depend on training this week ahead of Saturday's game against Overton. All of the lads from that squad will be on a high and will test anyone thinking that they can walk into training Tuesday and Thursday, and just think their place in the squad is certain. There is going to be some tough decisions to be made by the selection group, and some opportunities to be grasped by the players as well. The injuries to a few lads have created chances for someone like Damian Seder, who on the weekend got a game in the back row and played very well. Likewise with Luke Wedderkop, who had a good game on the wing for us Saturday.
With the number of competitions we are in, we need a big squad to pick from, and if one week you end up not being selected for the 1st XV, it is not the end of the world. This is a long season, and we are only into the second month of it! There are plenty of opportunities for those that train hard, and play harder for any team they are selected for."
