It's almost here!
There's a real buzz around the club with our South West Premier League campaign kicking off this weekend. The Cherry & Whites have a difficult start at home to newly promoted , ambitious Maidenhead who can count former England and British Lions centre Will Greenwood among their coaching staff. Camborne are not only the most travelled club in the league but we also travel more miles than any other team at our level or below in the Country, over 4,500 this season. The visitors from Berkshire will get a taste of what this is like on Saturday with a 550 mile round trip to the famous 'REC'
With a number of in's and out's at the club since the end of last season it will be a new look lineup which takes the field this weekend. Coaches and selectors are more than happy with the players they've brought in during the Summer.
There's no doubt this young squad has plenty of talent, fitness and pace, as they demonstrated at Launceston with a convincing first win in two decades despite being without a number of experienced players. There's a real hunger and confidence around the squad, something which was lacking during the second half of last season.
The selectors have a real headache picking the starting XV for this weekend with so many talented players pushing to make the team. Tonights training session should be interesting and intense as players make that final push to get in the squad. With the very experienced scrummaging coach Phil Angove and Pirates Alan Paver helping with the pack in recent weeks the forwards are looking very sharp and extremely mobile.
There could be returns to the squad for County players David Mankee, Andrius Zacharovas and Tony Whittle all of whom have played in County Championship Finals at Twickenham. One player who should make the lineup is latest signing Kieran Westlake (pictured) who despite being just 19 is already a double Cornwall Cup winner (colts & Senior), has played in the u18 Premiership final for Exeter Chiefs and has represented Cornwall @ u20 level. The youngster has also spent 18 months playing in Australia, so won't lack for experience.
Former Cornish Pirate, Wales 7's World Cup winner and Player/Coach Rhodri Mcatee has a decide wether to include himself in the squad. He shouldn't have a difficult decision on choosing the centre pair with Declan Matthews and Jake Champion already bagging 6 tries in two games and looking a superb partnership.
The team will be named after training this evening and you can see it on the website in the morning.
The match has a 2.30pm kick off (as will all 1st team home games at the REC this season).
For those who've yet to purchased their Vice Presidents season ticket Membership Secretary Peter Galfe will be at the clubhouse from 12 noon on Saturday (and at the club this evening from 7). Anyone without a membership card will have to buy an admission ticket at the turnstiles, so pick your up before the game! There will be the chance to win your season ticket money back (members only) when you buy the 'new' coloured Programme which has a lucky number on it.
