Ellistown FC win a classic

Another big shout out to Ref Martyn Jarvis who took another brave decision to play this game when there was plenty of evidence to say let’s play safe and have another blank Saturday due to a partially waterlogged pitch.

Decision to play was backed up by both teams and in the end a great game of football proved Martyn correct.

On this occasion, it was Ellistown who took the spoils in a close fought 2-1 victory against a Thurnby side who are better than their league position.

The game kicked off with a welcome return for keeper Tyler Weeks who after receiving the ball from the kick-off realised this was not the pitch to play football as he got stuck in the mud. This allowed the Thurnby attacker to nick the ball but the pitch held up the ball and with the attacker unable to roll the ball into an empty net, Tyler scrambled back to the tackle the player who should have scored but ended up with a free kick. A big let off for the keeper.

With the officials applying common sense on a mud bath of a pitch, tackles were flying in but this was not a dirty game. Physical yes and this contributed to an open 20 minutes when Ellistown hit the post and crossbar, while Thurnby were dangerous on the counter attack.

The game exploded on 28 mins when Christian Ngueusseu for Town and Louis Finney-Neckles for Thurnby saw red for squaring up to each other.

10 v 10 opened the game even further and Thurnby took advantage on 28 mins when a slick move saw Callum Key slot home.

EFC 0-1 TR 28 mins

The old Ellistown would have collapsed, this is the new Ellistown and we took control of the game and Thurnby were dependent on Farran Pope in defence to keep them ahead. Farran is one of the best defenders in the league and it showed today as he came up against one of the best strikers in the league in Tom Vyce.

Town equalised on the stroke of half-time, as Tom beat the offside trap to run through and score.

EFC 1-1 TR 45 mins and HT

Half time gave everyone 15 minutes to get their breath back and look forward to another block busting 45 minutes.

2nd half continued in the same style as the 1st with both teams going for it. This was like watching 2 heavyweights in a 15 round classic.

Key moment of the 2nd half came on 62 mins minutes, when Thurnby had a strong shout for a penalty. So confident of the appeal, Thurnby stopped playing and did not release the ref had waved play on. When they realised, Ellistown were flooding forward and it was too late for Thurnby to get numbers back. This allowed Daniel Yadav to fire home to give Ellistown the lead.

EFC 2-1 TR 62 mins

As you would expect, a shell shocked Thurnby side vented their frustrations but they had to kick-off 2-1 down.

Ellistown now had 30 minutes to defend our lead and with the excellent John Terry (Ronnie Morley), debutant Joshua Evans, Craig Brooker, and Rhys Scargill at the back, we done that.

Our unsung hero of the season, midfielder Mylo Walker was massive in midfield and deserved his man of the match award. With Fran Blake buzzing around and protected by Jake Robertson we were able to feed Daniel Yadav and Tom Vyce with chances to put this game out of Thurnby's reach.

In return, Thurnby had enough chances to win the game but unbelievably the scoreboard remained unchanged to give Ellistown a hard fought victory in a game that was a credit to the Senior League.

EFC 2-1 FT

Summary

Well done Town, apart from playing some superb football we went toe to toe with a Thurnby side who had a physical advantage.

Both teams deserve a lot of praise for putting on a great game of football in difficult conditions.

Final shout out goes to officials, Martyn Jarvis, Dean Simms and Toby Simms who ensured the game never got out of control.
