Ellistown & Ibstock Utd v Radcliffe Olympic
By Andrew Grout
Heads up guys, we deserved at least a draw
A gritty performance from the lads deserved at least a point against a well drilled Radcliffe side.
Cheered on by EIBS supporters club known as the village idiots, hopes were high that our improving form would result in 3 points against another top ten side.
Radcliffe dominated the early play, but our defence lead superbly by Jamie Hunt ensured the game stayed at 0-0.
With Carl Timms taking control of midfield and Ross McGarry looking dangerous when running at the attack, we started to take control and play some neat passing football.
As the 1st half progressed, it was clear this was going to be a tight game as at times both teams cancelled each other out. This suited us, as this allowed our confidence to grow.
Credit to both goalkeepers who made world class saves to ensure the first half finished goalless.
EIBS 0-0 RO HT
Second half followed the same pattern as the first, as both sides went toe to toe with each other. Our team spirit that has been growing over the last four games was coming through as we attacked and defended as one.
While Radcliffe were having the better chances, we were dangerous on the counter and the crucial moment came on 70 mins, when a cross from right went over our back line and left an unmarked Conor Moore in the penalty box with time to take the ball down and score.
EIB 0-1 RO 70 mins.
This was harsh on the boys but we re-grouped and went looking for the equaliser. We started to take risks at back as we flooded the midfield and started to unlock the Radcliffe defence.
The village idiots thought we had equalised on 80 mins when Ross McGarry jumped like a salmon 5 yards out to meet a superb cross to score. As we jumped up to celebrate, we saw the Radcliffe goalkeeper Chris Bennett fly to his left to make a fingertip save.
A crucial and perhaps save of the season knocked the stuffing out of the lads.
We continued to plug away but could not break Radcliffe down who had a couple of good chances in the last 5 minutes to make it 2-0.
The final whistle went with a final score of.
EIB 0 - 1 RO
The fact we are disappointed to lose this game, confirms how far we have progressed in the last 5 games.
We are proud of the lads today and know with games to be played against teams around us in the league we have a team who should climb the league table.
The team now have a spine that is holding us together, an attacking threat that is creating chances and a work ethic that put most Premier league teams to shame.
Keep going lads, you’re doing us proud.
The defeat still leaves us in 18th place on 21 points from 28 games. We are 18 points above Greenwood Meadows and 5 points behind 16th place Holwell Sports with 2 games in hand.
We travel to Holbrook Sports on Saturday 26th March with a good chance of picking up 3 points.
