Oh my gosh. Brass monkey weather or what. 3 DegC, with at least a – 5 DegC wind chill howling around Carmel College rugby pitches. Strangely, virtually every boy was sporting their brand new training top and trousers and complained bitterly when ask

During your reporters pre match preparations and team note taking, he was harangued by the petite but terrifying Michaela for spelling her little ones name wrong in every previous match report.
Apparently the U-11s finest forward battering ram is not spelt the run of the mill ,”Callum”, but he’s special and called “CaLum”.
I’m glad to set that travesty of spelling straight and hope my wounds heal up soon.

After a decent effort with the coaches warming the boys up, the starting 12 of our team’s lads faced the unknown threat of the West Park opposition for the first half.
As previously mentioned, it was freezing, windy and we were up hill, but the boys immediately tore into the opposition and were soon 10 yards out with a driving maul.
The ball popped out and Fintan scampered over for the first try.
The West Park lads were clearly taken back by our ferocity, but steadied their ship and it took a while of good strong play and good passing before there was a line out 5 yards out from their try line.
Gee’ed up from the spectators the special one CaLum, leapt like a Salmon, gathered the ball, pirouetted like Nureyev and thundered through the line out to score.
A short time later Ruari gathered the ball in broken play and went on a good 20 yard jinky run, before being felled by a last gasp tackle.
Then came the special one again, CaLum received the ball 15 yards out and ploughed through the entire West Park team to score an excellent solo try.
Just before half time Fintan made an excellent run, to pass to Frank to score unopposed.

The coaches swapped 4 of the starting team and brought on the semi frozen substitutes to continue West Parks bad day at the office.
From the kick off, two passes and Jack was away down the wing for a try, swiftly followed by a blind side run by Fintan from a scrum, to pass again to Frank for his second try.
Dan and Fintan narrowly missed another score down the blind side from a scrum, with Dan choosing to try and run through the big defender, rather than around him.
With the game firmly in our command the twin terrors of Fintan and Jack were removed.
This did allow West Park a breather and they managed to capitalise with a penalty 5 yards out to make their mark on the scoreboard.
Minutes before the final whistle the re-instated Jack blasted through the middle to score the final points.

A few extra mentions go to Liam, who has started training with the squad recently and had his first start today, The whole forward pack who were awesome and Oli ”the caveman” for some fearsome rucking.

Excellent day all around, apart from the frost bite and the woeful conversion kicking, one out of seven!

Overwhelming man of the match selection by all the parents, goes to the special one CaLum.
