Oldham U11s continue to improve

It was a good day for rugby as Oldham U11s Squad made their way the short distance to local rivals Rochdale U11s. The format was broken down into several short playing games with coaching in between. Old Brodelians U11s were also visiting Rochdale that day so the U11s would get a chance to see how they coped with two different opponents. As Oldham were 2 men short Rochdale very generously offered to lend some players as necessary which meant that the games could get started.

The Oldham lads made a good start in the first game against Rochdale with only a few missed tackles and gaps in defense leading to them conceding a couple of early trys. Theses trys were responded to quickly with another great break by Corey Kelly who beat 3 defenders to score Oldhams first try of the day.

In the second match again against Rochdale, Oldham really stepped up their game and began playing with more confidence and really competing at the rucks and mauls. Better defense and quick counter attacking lead to a drive over try by Harrison (Loan Player). This was followed up with several impressive carries by Justin Lawrence and Deacon Moxon. Then a lovely side step and finish by Tommy Duffy saw him score his first try for Oldham, this was followed by a great winding run and score from Devon Hawkins, also his first try for Oldham.

In their third game against Rochdale the Oldham lads almost scored first with Lawrence picking up and driving over the line, however the try was disallowed as the ball had not been passed out of the ruck. Oldham continued to defend well but great off loading and impressive carries from the opposition lead to two trys being scored against the boys in red and white.

The final game of the day was the biggest challenge for Oldham as Old Brodelians were a brilliantly drilled and Physically larger team. Oldham defended valiantly but strong carries and a brilliant off loading game lead to Old Brods leading 3- 0. A penalty in Oldhams favor, saw Kelly with a great bit of quick thinking take a tap and go and run through to score a beautiful try. Oldham pressed on and Lawrence continued to carry well and broke through the line several times, sadly to no avail. The Old Broadians side ploughed over for a fourth and final try.

Man of the Match (Player of the Day) was awarded to Justin Lawrence for outstanding tackling and superb ball carrying
