What a difference a week makes. After our overwhelming win last week this week we paid the price.
With players injured, players away and players being selected for other teams both Alan and Paul had their work cut out for them. Even after numerous phone calls all we could manage to get where 12 players.
Since we were playing our local rivals Aldwinians, who are also sat at the top of the table, this was an uphill battle. A gutsy performance from every player never letting the uphill battle get to them.
From kick off Oldham knew they had to build a quick score and pressured the opposition line making Aldwinians defend their line constantly. This was interrupted by Aldwinians using their player advantage kicking over the top and scoring the first try. This was not what Oldham needed. From the restart Oldham tried in vain to level the game but with a man down we couldn’t play the game we wanted. Aldwinians scored twice in quick succession and our heads where going down.
At half time our team talk was (change of plan) defend. With Chris Gill arriving straight from work Oldham had another player but even with Gills experience we still couldn’t get on the front foot. The only consolation was that in the second half the opposition only scored 3 tries, 2 of which whilst Oldham had a player in the sin bin. The score was not a fair reflection on the game. All praise goes out to all the players who can take a lot from this game.
Let’s hope next week we can have more of a settled team and get back on track. Man of the match goes to Steve Tyrell for his never say die attitude. The final score was Aldwinians 32 Oldham 0.
