Oldham 3rds were looking forward to a solid start to the season after a difficult season in 2014/15, and the away match at Heaton Moor was to set the scene going forward. The weather conditions were excellent, and the pitch looked well prepared for the season. The day didn’t get off to the best start as Oldham had only thirteen players, and Brent Pollitt came out of retirement to make up the numbers to fourteen and complete the front row.
Heaton Moor kicked off, and in the second minute had a quick break to score an early try. However Oldham replied with forwards pressure in the Heaton Moor twenty two, and after a couple of pick and drives and a good maul, Kevin Golland put Oldham’s first try of the season on the board in the eighth minute. Although Oldham made a valiant effort to challenge for the ball and make good their possession after this, Heaton Moor made better use of theirs, and they made a number of breaks through the first half which broke the Oldham defence and clocked up tries for them; this was also helped by their extra man. Danny Simpson left the field injured after twenty minutes, and after twenty nine minutes it became necessary for the scrums to go uncontested.
The second half proceeded in a similar way to the first, with Heaton Moor running in more tries, and Nick McDowell took a nasty injury to the foot which eventually resulted in him leaving the field after fifty three minutes. Oldham’s injury problems had become a feature of the game, and after an hour it was agreed between the two captains and the Referee to call the result.
Final Score: Heaton Moor 3rds 60 v Oldham Vets 5
Man of the Match went to Kieran Burrows who had an excellent game, and in the first half saved a definite try with a superb holding-up of the ball in the in-goal area. And finally a mention for the sportsmanship of Heaton Moor, who brought off a player every time Oldham lost a player through injury; this was an indication of the great spirit in which the game was played.
