Oldham 3rds travelled to Aldwinians at the weekend to try and recover some of the ground they lost in the home game earlier in the season when Aldwinians beat them by a high margin. Oldham turned out with a strong squad on a day with reasonably good conditions. The pitch was heavy though, although generally that does not work against Oldham 3rds.
In what has become typical Oldham form this season, the opposition had all the play in the first quarter with tries on the board after eight, thirteen and seventeen minutes. When Oldham eventually did gain good territory and threatened the Aldwinians line after twenty two minutes, Alan Pierre stole the ball and drove through for Oldham’s first try. However, Aldwinians still had the best of the play and scored another two tries in the half.
The second half was an altogether closer affair with Oldham scoring first after twenty seven minutes. This came as a result of an awesome driving scrum which travelled over fifteen metres with Neil Forsyth at number eight dropping on the ball for the try. The scrum was the main feature of the game, other than Aldwinians scoring lots of tries, and Oldham forwards were dominant at every scrum, driving Aldwinians back on both teams’ put in. Aldwinians scored again after twenty nine and thirty two minutes, and then Lee Whitehead intercepted the ball inside the Oldham half and ran two thirds the length of the pitch to score for Oldham. He converted this himself with a drop goal. This was followed by another driving scrum try from Neil Forsyth, this time converted by Rhys Jones. Aldwinians had the final say with a late try just before full time.
Final Score: Aldwinians 3rds 50 v Oldham 3rds 24
Despite the loss, Oldham had some great individual performances. The scrum in particular was really impressive, and thanks go to Billy Buckley for beefing up the front row along with Sean Barratt and Billy Duckworth for providing an excellent and very solid second row shove. Man of the Match went to Neil Forsyth for a great performance at number eight and two tries.
