After all the training that was done this week Oldham made the short trip to Eccles with a full strength team. Last season Eccles beat Oldham on both games. On each account coming from behind to win easily. Oldham knew this could happen again so the game plan was simple…… score as many points as possible and then see what happened !!
From the kick off Eccles took the first points with a penalty. They then scored a quick try which they converted to extend their lead. The game plan wasn’t going well at this point so Oldham re-grouped and started to get down to business. Lee Whitehead opened the scoring for Oldham which saw the flood gates unlocked and Eccles had no reply. The game was played at a frantic pace and Oldham looked far fitter and more composed than their opposition.
By half time Oldham had scored 45 points to Eccles 15.
Some changes were made seeing both wingers Anthony Cunningham and Danny Smith slot into the flanker positions and really take it to Eccles. The scrum was stronger than last week and it showed with hooker Chris Smith winning both Oldham ball and 90% of Eccles ball providing the Oldham backs with the platform to put the points on the board.
With Oldham dominating the game easily there was going to be only one winner today and the final score line showed it. Oldham 94 v Eccles 15.
All in all Oldham scored 14 tries along with 12 conversions. In the second half Oldhams defence stood strong and not once did Eccles cross the try line or put the ball over the cross bar.
