A hard fought victory for the home side keeps the momentum rolling.

Oldham again showed some great play today to earn a hard fought victory over Marple 3rds.

The game began with some hard scrummaging from Marple, who turned up with a much larger pack, and this continued throughout the game. However due to some committed defence from Oldham and some well organised team work Marple were unable to break the line for the majority of the match. Unlike many of Oldham games this one was not decided on the wings but through sheer commitment and hard play by all the team. Special mentions to a great performance from the captain Martin Meggison and Sean Barratt also from Chris Gill. And a mention to the lads that turned up but didn’t manage to get on. Great support as always and your time will come.

Oldham went behind after Marple scored a quick try but didn’t convert it. Oldham had to make a forced change after back row player Anthony Cunningham suffered a head injury. Not long after Oldhams replacement back rower Jason Green suffered the same fate as Cunningham.

Oldham played with passion and hit back with a try started by Mark Fitton breaking through and throwing an excellent pass to release winger Ben Smith who raced 50 meters to score Oldham’s first try. The conversion was missed but Oldham could smell more points. With the conditions being hard and the game fairly physical it was down to the forwards to do something which they did with the next points coming from prop Rhys Jones who darted around past 2 would be tacklers and put the ball down for Oldham’s 2nd try of the game. This was converted by Meggison.

Half-time came with the scores at Oldham 12 – Marple 5.

Oldham scored the only points of the 2nd half through ever supporting centre Martin Kenny (a Chris Ashton wanna be). This was converted by Meggison to give Oldham a strong lead. Marple tried to come back into the game but some excellent defense from Oldham meant they couldn’t break the line and there were no more scores from either side.

Full time saw the win for the home side. Oldham 3rds 19 v Marple 3rds 5
