Oldham 3rds took on top of the league Leigh this week at Manor Park.
Leigh came out firing, a huge well drilled pack put Oldham on the back foot straight from the start, Leigh smashed into the Oldham defence with wave after wave of attack and it wasn’t long before Oldham’s defence faltered and Leigh went over to score the opening try.
Oldham’s defence was valiant and although Leigh pushed and pressed, they could not break the Oldham defence with both backs and forwards tackling like Trojans.
The first half ended at only 5 points to nil for Leigh.
Oldham regrouped for the second half, the backs were fast and started to break down the Leigh attack, but in the rucks and mauls Oldham struggled to get the ball off a very well drilled Leigh pack.
The second score also went to Leigh, with their pack making good ground and as the ball went to their backs some gaps appeared in the Oldham defence and Leigh went over under the post which they then converted.
Almost straight from the restart Oldham’s backs showed their potential and Aaron Flemings shot through a gap in Leigh’s defence and scored a great try and then only minutes later Oldham again broke in the backs and Louis Fitton rounded of a great move from Oldham. Oldham’s backs continued to threaten with Anthony Beswick at 10 for Oldham making some great runs but some sloppy handling and bad refereeing decisions meant this came to nothing. Leigh managed to spoil everything in the forwards depriving Oldham of the ball again and they managed to break and score a good try which they converted. And they also kicked a penalty in the dying seconds to round off a good close game
Oldham had played and defended admirably but could not break down the Leigh pack.
Man of the match went to Anthony Beswick.
Final score Oldham 3rd 10 - Leigh 3rd 22.
