A makeshift Oldham 3rd team travelled to Liverpool this week to play high flying Liverpool University Veterinary College. Oldham’s 3rd and 4th team are ravaged with injuries and only one team could be made from the 2 squads. But the team that took to the field where committed to the cause.
A very young and fast Liverpool side ran everything at Oldham from the start, playing the ball through the backs and the speed of the Liverpool centres gave the Oldham team little chance and it seemed like the hosts were able to score at will whenever they got the ball. Several of the Oldham team were playing out of position and this did not help their efforts at stopping the onslaught from Liverpool. The Oldham pack, however, was strong and showed some resolute scrumaging and superb rucking. Alan Pierre smashed into the Liverpool pack on numerous occasions with Jon Maslen and Dave Roberts backing up and winning good ball on the floor. Liverpool’s pack could not match the Oldham side for strength or determination but valiant as the Oldham team were the Liverpool backs knew they could outpace Oldham and did so several more times.
Oldham scored 2 magnificent forward tries pushing over for Maslen to score a well-deserved try just before the half time break and Paul Blomfield to also touch down to score at the back of the scrum with the last play of the Match. Ryan Barker stepped up to kick the conversion as the final whistle went.
Final score Liverpool College 71 - Oldham 3rds 12
A well drilled Liverpool team were deserved winners but Oldham’s efforts were admirable, sticking at it right to the very end.
Man of the match went to Jon Maslen who led the pack by example.
