Oldham 3rds where local this week travelling the short distance to Droylsdon to play Aldwinians. Always a feisty local derby and this game was no exception. The game started at a frenetic pace and Oldham were totally shell shocked, Aldwinians pressured from the start and Oldham could not stop them scoring 3 quick tries converting one, but then Oldham regrouped and started playing to their strength through the great pace in the backs. Wave after wave of Oldham attack led to their first try when Carl Malloy's persistence paid off and he darted over to score. And then before half time Aaron Jiminez playing at flanker for the first time picked up a loose ball on the 10 yard line and he carved through the Aldwinians defence to score a great individual try, this was converted by Anthony Hilton.
First half ended: Aldwinians 17 v Oldham 12.
The second half was spoilt a bit with some poor refereeing but Oldham were still the dominant team, Wayne Hadfield running from full back was superb after Aldwinians constant kicking as they were so under pressure, but after a small off the ball incident the ref saw fit to award Aldwinians a penalty in front of the posts which they kicked.
Oldham carried on pressuring and after some great forward play with Pete Hilton, Carl Gemmell and Phil Walmsley carrying the ball up field Oldham went over in the corner for their 3rd try again scored by Carl Malloy and converted by Anthony Hilton. The ref was then very quick to blow for full time and on the day the better team came second.
Final score: Aldwinians 20 v Oldham 19
Outstanding performance from a young and inexperienced team. Man of the match was Wayne Adfield playing fullback for his first time and doing superbly well.
