The first game to be played at home this season by the 3rds was to take place in perfect conditions on a great looking pitch. Oldham 3rds had struggled for numbers in the previous game, but this time they had a full team plus subs and were looking forward to what promised to be a testing local derby. The team was welcoming back David Roberts for this game, along with previous regulars Nick McDowell and Carl Molloy.
From the start, the game was fought hard by both sides, but Aldwinians had the upper hand for much of the first half and played the majority of it in Oldham's half, despite Oldham competing well for everything and putting up a strong challenges. Early scores went to Aldwinians, but later in the half Oldham started to drive forward, and five minutes before half time Molloy came off the bench and scored his first try of the season with a sprint down the right wing to score in the corner.
In the second half, Oldham were much more competitive. Oldham's first try came from a long kick and chase from the midfield by Wayne Hadfield, in which he showed a great turn of speed and won the race to touch the ball down. This was converted by McDowell, and Oldham were back in the running. Oldham scored again in the right corner after some great pick and drive work by the pack, with Roberts eventually touching the ball down. This was converted by Chris Brown. Oldham were ahead at this stage, but Aldwinians showed their quality and the fact that they really had come to win buy regaining the upper hand and creating further scores to take the game.
Final Score: Oldham 3rds 19 v Aldwinians 3rds 31
All in all a good performance by Oldham, and signs of great potential for this season. Man of the match went to David Roberts for great work in the pack and fantastic efforts at the breakdown.
