Oldham 3rds were back at home this weekend facing what promised to be a hard game against the visitors from Wigan. Oldham were fielding a full side plus replacements, and looking forward to a possible points score on the table.
The match got underway in windy but otherwise fine conditions, and from the start it became clear how Wigan were going to play the game. They had good strong runners in the backs, and they were using their possession to play the ball away from the pack and run at the Oldham backs whenever they could. Although Oldham competed well in the forwards, the Wigan tactic soon began to pay off and they had scored their opening try in the first ten minutes. Oldham were undeterred though and before long Adam Waterhouse had picked up the ball off the back of an Oldham scrum in the Wigan twenty two and run the ball over the line. The try was converted by Chris Brown.
Wigan came back hard and kept pressing through the pack and then spinning the ball out though the centers, and another couple of tries were added to their total. Before the end of the half, Oldham were awarded a penalty deep into Wigan territory, and the forwards carried the ball forward off it, with Bob Webster ultimately taking it over the line for Oldham's second try, which was again converted by Brown.
The second half played out much the same as the first, although with deteriorating light and weather conditions. Wigan had the upper hand for much of it, but Oldham again proved that they are a side worthy of playing at this level through two tries scored in the half, one off a driving maul, touched down by Webster for his second of the game, and the other from Waterhouse also for his second. Both tries were well converted by Brown.
Final Score: Oldham 3rds 28 v Wigan 3rds 56
Oldham's twenty eight points was the highest total so far this season, and a sign that Oldham 3rds are continuing to build their game at this level. Man of the Match went to Bob Webster for his consistent work throughout the game and his two tries.
Oldham 3rds now look forward to next week's cup game away at Ashton on Mersey.
