Oldham u16s lose away.

Oldham U16s travelled to New Brighton with a full squad and were in good spirits, looking to improve on their recent performances and try and turn their season around.

Oldham started brightly again as has been the way with recent games, putting the home side under a lot of pressure and trying to keep the game play in the New Brighton half. Some big tackles were going in, especially from Caylum Kay and Joe Kershaw. On the attacking front Sammy Ireland tested the defence with a strong break but the home side held firm. After this initial period of pressure New Brighton got themselves more into the game and started to apply some pressure of their own.

Oldham u16s problems this season can be summed up very easily. They spent 10 mins in their opponents half attacking their 22 and Try line but came away with no score. New Brighton mounted one significant attack and breached the Oldham line. 0-7 down and wondering what they need to do to score.

The game was much more balanced now with both sides taking their turns to mount strong attacks and throw in some heroic tackling. Caylum again putting himself forward and leading from the front, as well as Aleks Kurkiewicz and Billy Cloran driving the ball in and pushing the rucks and mauls forward whenever they could. Unfortunately despite several sequences of good play by Oldham they were still unable to breach the New Brighton defence and the points going the other way were slowly edging the score board away from the visitors.

Archie Taylor joined the line from full back on a number of occasions adding some pace and linking up well with Brad Hicks and Sammy out wide but again no joy as the final tackle was made or the pass went astray. New Brighton kicked a number of balls in behind the defence and Alex Taylor showed how much he’s settled into his game this season with some calm collections and counter attacks. Elliot Foley and Ali Hassan drove the ball in well but were always stopped before they could really break free.

Final Score: New Brighton 27 v Oldham 0.

All in all a good performance with just the disappointment of not being able to score, which seems to be the main theme of Oldham’s season. Some of the decision making was poor and a certain amount of selfishness when the pass out may have scored the try, so still a fair way to go on this squads rugby jourmey. One or two strong performances from certain individuals but guys, remember, it’s a team sport !!!!
Oldham man of the match went to Caylum Kay, but he was closely pushed by Sammy and Archie.
