Oldham U14s win their latest Blacksticks Challenge game.

Oldham had a full squad plus two subs for their trip down the M60 to play Trafford.

Trafford started the game with a low kick to Oldham and although the visitors kept possession in the first few minutes of the game they lost ground due the pressing play from Trafford. The first scrum of the game went Oldham’s way and a kick gave them some precious breathing space and they also took the ball back fairly quickly. Oldham found some form and gained ground before Jay Taylor made a massive run from a scrum to place the ball down between the posts. Rob Charles converted to make the score 0-7.
The Oldham players, fired up from the early lead, made good ground until Trafford forced the ball out of play. Oldham won the line out only to lose possession and Trafford used their bigger players to drive the ball over the line. Conversion was good. 7-7.
Oldham kept their heads up and showed the more positive play although possession changed frequently due to loose balls. Adam Berry made a good run but was pushed out of bounds to force a line out which Trafford won.

The half time whistle had the scores at 7-7.

Oldham got the second half off to a good start taking possession early and made ground with some good runs especially from Josh Jones-Dean. Again, the possession frequently changed hands until Oldham found some space and Taylor sprinted through to put the ball down in the corner. The tight conversion kick was a near miss which put the score at 7-12.
Oldham were full of confidence. They worked hard near the opposition’s goal line before Oscar Cheetham got the ball over the line. Charles stepped up and converted the kick. 7-19.
Oldham seemed to be in full flow until Trafford used their physical strength to go on the attack and they made some good ground. Oldham defended well near their goal line and pushed Trafford back until eventually Trafford pushed through and scored a try with the ball in the corner. The kick was missed taking the score to 12-19. The final play of the game was Oldham’s kick to Trafford just before the final whistle.

Final Score: Trafford MV U14’s 12 v Oldham U14’s 19

The Oldham U14s are starting to show what they are capable of and hopefully this second win will show them they have the potential to compete seriously in this league. Well done lads.
