1st XI – Week 5 Preview (Sat 30 May, 13:00)
Week 5 of the 18‑week season brings a compelling home fixture for the 1st XI, who welcome the unbeaten Bristol New XI to Abbots Leigh Road. Under the leadership of Otis Hillenbrand, the side will be eager to respond after last weekend’s defeat to Dyrham & Hinton. New XI are a side that like to get after the bowling, and with their top order known for setting an aggressive tempo, the toss becomes a quietly decisive moment. Otis will be keen for the coin to fall his way and shape the rhythm of the afternoon.
Last Sat’s match was a frustrating one for the 1st XI, not least because it contained individual performances of real quality. The standout was Behroz Khan’s superb 95, an innings full of timing and authority that anchored the chase and kept the visitors in contention far longer than seemed likely. His form is a major positive heading into Week 5, and supporters will hope he continues to set the tone at the top.
With the ball, Simon Hillenbrand (3–32) and Sahil Waje (3–47) were the pick of the attack, both finding rhythm and troubling the hosts throughout their 40‑over effort of 226. Their combined six wickets kept the innings in check and gave the 1st XI a foothold. However, the side will be without Simon this weekend, and his absence removes a layer of control and cunning that has been central to the attack.
The challenge now is to convert individual excellence into collective momentum. Week 5 is often the point in the season where patterns begin to settle - teams either drift or define themselves. The 1st XI have shown enough quality to suggest they belong in the latter category. If the middle overs can be tightened, if partnerships can be built around Behroz’s form, and if the bowling unit can adapt without Simon’s guile, there is every chance of handing Bristol New XI their first defeat of the campaign.
A warm welcome is also extended to Chris Bridge, returning to the club and going straight into the 1st XI squad. His experience and presence will be a welcome boost as the side look to steady their early‑season trajectory.
2nd XI – Week 5 Preview (Sat 30 May, 13:00)
The 2nd XI, under the thoughtful stewardship of Mike Dean, make the short trip to fellow strugglers Old Cathedralians for their Week 5 fixture. With Old Caths currently bottom of the table following a winter exodus of several key players, this match offers both sides a chance to find early‑season traction.
The 2nd XI were without a fixture last weekend, unable to raise a side due to player unavailability. It is a reminder of the realities of 2nd XI cricket - availability ebbs and flows, and line‑ups can shift dramatically from week to week. Yet, under Mike’s leadership, the group has shown resilience and a willingness to adapt, qualities that will be essential on Sat.
Old Cathedralians, despite their league position, remain a proud club with a competitive spirit, and the short trip will require focus from the outset. The 2nd XI will look to draw on the grit shown in their earlier outing at Blagdon, where they recovered from 36–6 to post a competitive total thanks to a superb unbeaten 110‑run partnership between Stuart Cole (55)* and Andy Hamilton (50)*, the latter registering his maiden fifty. Those contributions remain a bright spot in the early season and a reminder of the depth within the squad.
The 2nd XI also receive a welcome boost this week with Nadeem Khan returning to the club and strengthening the squad. His inclusion adds experience and depth at a time when the side are looking to build stability.
Week 5 now offers a chance to reset. With both sides seeking momentum, the contest may hinge on which team settles quickest. If the 2nd XI can find early rhythm with the ball and build partnerships with the bat, they will feel confident of returning from Old Caths with something tangible to show for their efforts.
