Last Thursday Abergavenny Bowls Club were the guests of St Martins in Hereford to play a five rink Mixed Friendly game. On a warm sunny afternoon, ideal for bowls, St Martins won on three rinks to win the game by the narrowest of margins, claiming victory by 72 shots to 71. The two victorious rinks for Abergavenny were those of Gethin Hill and Martin Doughty. Gethin Hill’s rink took command in the second half of the game, scoring thirteen shots to win by 21 shots to 17. The rink of Martin Doughty was always in command to win by 14 shots to eight. The rinks of Mary Evans, John Vale and John Whomersley were all level with their opponents after nine ends. However, on each of those three rinks St Martins gained the advantage in the second half of the game. This led to defeat for the Abergavenny rinks by 15 shots to 13, 15 shots to 11 and 17 shots to 12 respectively.
On Friday evening the Abergavenny mother and son duo of Samantha and Jack Vale played the Caldicot husband and wife pair of Alun and Jill Parker in the semi-final of the EMBA Mixed Pairs competition. The Abergavenny pair established an early lead and went on to a comfortable victory to reach the final. This final will be played at Abergavenny in mid-September as part of the EMBA Trophy Day celebrations. By reaching the final they continue the tradition of Abergavenny members success in this competition.
The following day, Saturday, Brynmawr were the visitors to Avenue Road for Abergavenny’s final MBA game of the season. On a glorious sunny afternoon each team won on two rinks and lost on two but Abergavenny managed to secure overall victory by 77 shots to 67.
Jack Vale’s rink took command of the game in the second half to forge ahead of the opposing Brynmawr rink. They cemented their lead by scoring five shots on the eighteenth end which allowed them to seal victory by 24 shots to 13. The game was very close on Matthew Vale’s rink but they scored eight shots over the final five ends, which included four shots on the final end, to secure victory by 19 shots to 16.
John Beaton’s rink established an early eight shot lead. This was gradually reduced until scores were level going into the final end. The Brynmawr rink then scored three shots to secure victory by 20 shots to 17. It was “nip and tuck” on Gethin Hill’s rink with the lead changing hands throughout the contest. The Brynmawr rink managed to outscore the home rink over the final five ends to win by 18 shots to 17.
This Saturday Bedwelty Park are the visitors to Abergavenny for a GBL game. This is followed next Monday by a Mixed Friendly against RTB Retired at Brynmawr. Unfortunately, the Mixed Friendly against Talgarth has been cancelled due to unforeseen problems.
